1. Apresentação Este programa de doutoramento acompanha a recente amplificação transnacional dos Estudos Americanos, proporcionando a questionação crítica dos limites da disciplina, já que o conceito de América será confrontado com o de 'Américas', o de 'Norte' com o de 'Sul'. O estudo e a investigação que este curso pretende incrementar tem plena justificação e utilidade na formação de um espírito crítico sobre o lugar dos Estados Unidos no mundo, o nosso próprio lugar no mundo (português e europeu), o papel e efeitos da globalização, bem como a conflitualidade entre as identidades e as diferenças (sexuais, raciais, étnicas, de classe) nas sociedades atuais de fronteiras permeáveis e populações múltiplas. As perspectivas teóricas dos Estudos Americanos poderão ainda informar de maneira inovadora a análise comparativa a partir de um ponto de vista histórico- cultural português, estimulando novas leituras transatlânticas e diaspóricas, convocando as movimentações culturais, linguísticas e literárias entre Portugal, África, Índias Ocidentais e Brasil. A cooperação com o Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES) permite enriquecer e diversificar o programa, alargando- o a novas áreas, assim reforçando a interdisciplinariedade que é a marca do campo, bem como a comparatística como uma das suas metodologias centrais. Este programa de estudo propõe- se assim analisar as múltiplas perspectivas e identidades que caracterizam a dinâmica multicultural da sociedade dos Estados Unidos. 1. Introduction This PhD program follows the latest transnational developments in American Studies, providing the critical questioning of the limits of the discipline in bringing the concept of America face- to- face with those of the Americas, the North and the South. The study and research fostered by the program are vindicated and useful for shaping a critical perspective on the United States place in the world, the roles and effects of globalization, as well as the conflicts between identities and differences (sexual, racial, ethnic, class) within the permeable borders and the heterogeneous populations of our contemporary societies. Taking a historical and cultural stance from a location such as Portugal can lead American Studies theoretical perspectives in innovative directions, stimulating new transatlantic and diasporic readings, and bringing together the cultural, linguistic, and literary exchanges between Portugal, Africa, the West Indies, and Brazil. With a view to analyzing the multiple perspectives and identities at work in the multicultural dynamics of United States society, the cooperation with the Center for Social Studies (CES) works towards the strengthening and diversification of this PhD program. It extends the program into new areas, thus reinforcing two of American Studies methodological, interdisciplinarity, and comparativism. 2. Objetivos Tendo os Estudos Americanos, desde o início da sua constituição como disciplina, privilegiado a interdisciplinaridade, congregando contributos da história, da sociologia e da ciência política, entre muitas outras como as artes visuais, o cinema, as relações internacionais, a diplomacia, este programa pretendeu com a sua associação ao Centro de Estudos Sociais alargar o seu âmbito, enriquecendo a vertente interdisciplinar e contemplando a dimensão hemisférica das Américas. objetivo é não só aprofundar criticamente o entendimento dos Estados Unidos, enquanto superpotência que mais influência cultural exerce no mundo global, mas também confrontar esse estudo com o de outras realidades do continente americano, com ênfase nos estudos interamericanos, e também com perspetivas transatlânticas. Este Curso cria condições para uma investigação especializada numa área de inegável interesse no plano cultural e político na nossa contemporaneidade. Além de poder atrair candidatos com formação prévia na área, pode também captar o interesse de outros especialistas de áreas diferentes, que queiram dedicar- se a uma pesquisa avançada neste campo de estudos. 2. Objectives Since its establishment as a discipline, American Studies has privileged an interdisciplinary approach - hence the intention of the program to broaden its scope by means of an association with the Center for Social Studies. This partnership enriches the interdisciplinary component of the program, while also covering the hemispheric dimension of the Americas. Its goal is not only to deepen a critical understanding of the United States as the most influent superpower in cultural terms in the global world, but also to confront the United States with the study of other realities in the American continent, with an emphasis on inter- American studies, as well as with other transatlantic perspectives. This degree provides for specialized research in an area of indisputable current interest on both cultural and political grounds. Besides being able to attract candidates with prior training in the area, it can also capture the interest of other specialists from different fields, who want to engage in advanced research in this field of study. 3. Edição de 2014-2015 Seminários disponíveis / Seminars offered in 2014-2015 Ensino em Português ou Inglês / Teaching in Portuguese or English (de acordo com o público / according to students' preference) 1º semestre / 1st semester Seminário em Estudos Americanos / Seminar in American Studies (10 ECTS) Maria José Canelo: Cultura Americana A - "As Américas: perspetivas mútuas" Sob o título As Américas: Perspectivas Mútuas, este seminário propõe- se seguir as metodologias e molduras teóricas da área emergente dos estudos interamericanos, com ênfase no transnacionalismo. O objectivo principal é sensibilizar o/as estudantes para a inevitável interdependência das histórias e culturas das várias regiões que compõem as Américas. Tomando a nação hegemónica dos EUA como ponto de partida, observaremos a construção e a crítica dessa hegemonia (e excepcionalismo), para considerarmos, depois, como a desigualdade profunda que sempre marcou as comparações de natureza sobretudo económica e política entre o Norte e o Sul das Américas gerou um imaginário cultural específico (progresso / retrocesso, riqueza / pobreza, artificialidade / autenticidade, democracia / tirania, liberdade / violência), que contribuiu para essa desigualdade, reforçando- a, ao mesmo tempo que afectou noções de pertença e identidade que continuam a pairar sobre aquele/as que se movem entre as fronteiras desse espaço geopolítico. Por outras palavras, interessa- nos especialmente compreender em que medida as Américas são uma invenção, como vêm argumentando historiadores e críticos como Edmundo O Gorman e Walter Mignolo. Será, pois, no terreno dessa invenção, e das suas montagens e desmontagens, que nos moveremos, procurando examinar as dimensões inter- americanas desse imaginário através da justaposição e análise de documentos culturais que se propuseram definir e explicar as relações entre o Norte e o Sul. Under the title The Americas: Mutual Perspectives, this seminar will follow the methodologies and theoretical frames proposed by the emergent field of inter- American studies, with a particular emphasis on transnationalism. The main goal is to raise awareness about the necessary interdependencies of the histories and cultures of the regions that form the Americas. Taking the hegemonic United States as a starting point, we will look into the construction and critique of that hegemony (and exceptionalism) and then follow by considering how the deep inequality that always marked the essentially economic and political comparisons between the North and the South inspired a particular cultural imaginary (progress / backwardness; wealth / poverty; artificiality / authenticity; democracy / tyranny; freedom / violence) that added to and reinforced that inequality, while ultimately affecting also notions of belonging and identity that still haunt those who move between the borders of this geopolitical space. In other words, we are interested in understanding in how far the Americas are an invention, as historians and critics such as Edmundo O Gorman and Walter Mignolo have forcefully argued. It will be therefore in the terrain of that invention, of its making and unmaking, that we will move, trying to examine the inter- American dimensions of those imaginaries by means of juxtaposing and analyzing a series of cultural documents that aspired to define and explain the relations between the North and the South. Seminário em Estudos Americanos / Seminar in American Studies (10 ECTS) Isabel Caldeira: Literatura Americana A - "Vozes da diáspora africana nas Américas" Este seminário pretende analisar formas de representação da violência da privação de liberdade, história, memória e voz em textos literários produzidos nos Estados Unidos e nas Caraíbas por escritoras de origem africana. Com a ajuda de um enquadramento pós- colonial, sublinhando conceitos teóricos fundamentais como trauma, memória e identidade, iremos reflectir sobre as diversas formas como as escritoras representam experiências de vida no contexto de sociedades racializadas, pensam a identidade individual frente à identidade de grupo, estabelecem relações com o passado e a história, criticam a democracia e a reinventam, e procuram conquistar uma voz própria através de diferentes estratégias. "Voices of the African Diaspora in the Americas" This seminar proposes to identify and analyze forms of representation of the violence of deprivation of freedom, history, memory, and voice in literary texts produced by women writers of African descent in the United States and the Caribbean. Through a postcolonial theoretical frame, underlining fundamental concepts such as trauma, memory and identity, the analysis will focus on different ways the writers represent life experiences in racialized societies, the relation between individual and group identity, the connection established with the past and history, the criticism of democracy and its reinvention, and the various strategies to acquire a distinctive voice. O objectivo deste Seminário é congregar reflexões que ajudem a entender (teorizando) a nação mais poderosa do planeta num século que abriu em profunda crise, sua e do mundo em geral. Das origens puritanas à mitificação e simultânea devastação da natureza, da violência da expansão ao sentido de missão e ao imperialismo, da economia escravocrata à ética capitalista, até às mais recentes capitulações da política aos mercados de capitais, a nação americana será escalpelizada nas suas contradições internas e nas suas relações complexas com outras nações e os restantes continentes. In this seminar, we will strive to come to an understanding (by theorizing) of the most powerful nation on the planet in a century beginning under the spell of a profound crisis, which affects both the US and the world at large. From the Puritan origins of the American nation to the mythification and concomitant devastation of nature, from the violence of expansion to the sense of imperial mission, from the slave economy to the capitalist ethos, up to the most recent capitulation of politics to the financial markets, the American nation will be rigorously scrutinized as to its complex internal contradictions and its relations with other nations and the remaining continents. Para orientar estes seminários serão convidados/as investigadores/as de outras instituições nacionais e estrangeiras, sempre que possível. Estes seminários têm também o objectivo de estimular a produção de artigos para publicação e participação em congressos por parte das/os doutorandas/os. Research and Discussion Seminar In this seminar the students will discuss theories and methodologies to help them with their projects. Scolars from other institutions (national and international) may be invited to deliver seminars. Seminário em Ciências Sociais II / Seminar in Social Studies II (10 ECTS) António Sousa Ribeiro: "Representações da Violência" O seminário visa uma abordagem aprofundada da questão da relação entre cultura e violência, em particular no que concerne à problemática da representação. Começando pelo problema central do lugar da violência na modernidade, proceder- se- á a um levantamento dos lugares teóricos fundamentais, percorrendo- se alguns dos autores que ofereceram contributos essenciais para uma reflexão neste âmbito. Concluir- se- á com o traçado tão exaustivo quanto possível de um mapa conceptual que permita uma orientação segura num campo marcado por decisivas ambivalências. "Representations of Violence" In this seminar we propose to address the relationship between culture and violence, and specifically the problematics of representation. Starting by considering the place of violence in modernity, we shall then study some of the authors and theories that are fundamental in this field. Finally we shall map key concepts, which will serve as a useful instrument for analysis of a field full of ambiguities. Este último pretende expor as/os alunas/os à investigação e reflexão de ponta em Estudos Americanos, que vêm sendo feitas em Portugal e no estrangeiro, reforçando assim os quadros teóricos e metodológicos que irão escorar os projetos de tese e preparar ainda os/as alunos/as para a discussão em grupo. - O projeto de tese será defendido perante uma Comissão de Supervisão do Curso no 4º semestre. 9
- Se a Comissão de Supervisão do Curso aprovar o projeto, passar- se- á à redação da tese, a ser entregue até ao final do 8º semestre. - Se o projeto não for aprovado, haverá um prazo para reformulação, findo o qual haverá lugar a nova avaliação. Se esta voltar a ser negativa, o/a aluno/a será excluído/a do programa. - Os 2 anos seguintes serão dedicados à investigação e elaboração da tese, à qual corresponderão 80 ECTS no total, sendo acompanhados pelo seminário plurianual de orientação de tese (40 ECTS). - O Curso é principalmente ministrado em horário diurno, mas combinado com horas pós- laborais. Os dias de lecionação serão preferencialmente sexta e sábado. - Para obterem a qualificação de Doutor, os/as alunos/as terão que obter um total de 240 ECTS, completando com sucesso as unidades curriculares (160 ECTS) e escrevendo e defendendo uma tese (80 ECTS). Os Programas de Doutoramento do CES regem- se pelo regulamento Académico da Universidade de Coimbra. 7. Regulations After the end of the 2nd semester and the beginning of the 3rd semester, students must choose a thesis theme and a supervisor. - The elaboration and (20 ECTS) and defense of the thesis project (20 ECTS) will take place during the 3rd and 4th semesters respectively, with the support of a research and debate seminar in each semester, summing a total of 20 ECTS. This seminar aims at introducing students to the most recent research and taking place in Portugal and abroad within the field of American Studies, thus strengthening the theoretical and methodological framework which will support the thesis projects, as well as preparing students for group discussion. - The thesis project will be defended before the Programme's Supervision Panel, on the 4th semester. - If the Programme's Supervision Panel approves the project, this will be followed by the thesis elaboration, to be delivered until the end of the 8th semester. - If the project is not approved, there will be a deadline for reformulation, after which there will be a new evaluation. If it is again rejected, the student will be excluded from the programme. - The following 2 years will focus on research and thesis elaboration, corresponding to a total of 80 ECTS, which will be accompanied by a pluriannual seminar for thesis supervision (40 ECTS). - The Programme's classes will take place mostly on daytime, but there will also be evening classes. - In order to obtain the PhD degree, students must achieve a total of 40 ECTS, by successfully fulfilling the curricular units (160 ECTS) and elaborating the thesis (80 ECTS). Perguntas Frequentes Como posso apresentar a candidatura? As candidaturas são submetidas via internet, na plataforma da Universidade de Coimbra, InforEstudante - NONIO. Todos os documentos solicitados devem ser digitalizados e anexados à candidatura. Candidaturas enviadas em papel não serão consideradas elegíveis. Qual a data limite do processo de candidatura? Os processos de candidatura decorrem normalmente em três fases: - março - junho- julho - agosto. Estar atento/a à informação publicada em http://www.uc.pt/fluc/ Quando será recebida a informação sobre a seleção dos candidatos? Os candidatos e as candidatas receberão informação sobre os processos de seleção e matrícula antes da abertura dos prazos de matrícula. O 1º Semestre decorrerá entre setembro de 2014 e dezembro de 2014 e o 2º Semestre entre fevereiro e julho de 2015. É obrigatória a frequência dos seminários? Sim, não está ainda aberta a possibilidade de acompanhamento à distância dos seminários; deverão estar presentes em 75% das sessões ou, em casos excecionais, em 50%, com compensação acordada com o/a Professor/a. Os alunos e alunas devem participar nos seminários previstos no plano de estudos, bem como nas sessões com oradores externos, organizadas no âmbito das atividades do programa. 12
