WELCOME MESSAGE Dear Colleagues and Friends, It is our pleasure to have you present at the BCTRIMS 15 th Annual Meeting in Campinas-SP at the Royal Palm Plaza Resort. The focus of this meeting will be the mental and cognitive disorders in multiple sclerosis, for which we have the participation of leading experts in the area. One of the main objectives of BCTRIMS is to motivate research in Brazil, particularly in multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica and correlated diseases, bringing the opportunity for presentation and discussion of research results, as well as for exchange of scientific experience. Therefore, it is an appropriate event for you to present your papers and compete for prizes. Do take this opportunity to discover Campinas, which is the second largest city in São Paulo State, one of the main business centers in the country and the technological pole in Latin America, having two big universities PUCC and UNICAMP. Campinas also has some attractions well worth visiting, such as the Taquaral Park, Bosque dos Jequitibás, Metropolitan Cathedral, and Carlos Gomes Square. In addition, there are many restaurants offering a range of cuisines with local and international flavors, as well as entertainment options including theater, movies and a rich nightlife with different types of bars and night clubs. THE ORIGINS OF BCTRIMS A group of Brazilian neurologists gathered together for a scientific symposium in the city of Botucatu, São Paulo state, on 28 August 1999. From this event emerged the foundation of the Brazilian Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis(BCTRIMS), a national organization aimed at establishing a network of healthcare professionals interested in the field of multiple sclerosis and other demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system. Since its foundation, BCTRIMS has continued to grow, with current membership exceeding 300 colleagues from around the country, representing over 30 universities and medical schools in 22 Brazilian states. BCTRIMS MISSION The mission of BCTRIMS is to foster collaboration among clinicians and researchers throughout Brazil in order to implement studies and educational activities on multiplesclerosis and other demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system, as well as to develop strategies to influence healthcare providers so that the most effective actions for benefiting individuals affected by these diseases may be adopted. BCTRIMS GOALS To elucidate the epidemiology, genetics and clinical features of MS and other demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system in Brazil; To build a national MS registry and database; To build uniform protocols for research and stimulate cooperative studies in different regions of the country; To publish consensuses and guidelines for diagnosis and treatment of MS and other demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system; To promote continuing medical education activities; 8 BCTRIMS 15 th Annual Meeting

To stimulate and support young researchers within the field of MS; To organize and promote BCTRIMS Annual Meetigs; To represent Brazilian MS researchers in similar international committees; To interact with similar organizations throughout the world, in order to exchange experiences and promote collaborative actions; To assist and serve as a consultancy organization to Brazilian government agencies, in order to formulate strategies for healthcare within the field of MS and other demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system; To provide healthcare professionals and the lay community with information on MS pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment. BCTRIMS ACHIEVEMENTS The Brazilian Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis has had great success since it was established, and has achieved a number of noteworthy goals, including: Meetings with government officials to implement policies for benefiting MS patients, such as free disease-modifying therapy and multidisciplinary care; Assistance to government agencies in matters concerning evaluation of standards of quality of care delivered by MS centers in Brazil; Publication of Guidelines on Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis; Promotion of BCTRIMS Annual Meetings since its foundation in 1999; Promotion of scientific symposia and other educational activities; Publication of Fascículos de Esclerose Múltipla ; Stimulation and support for numerous scientific publications by its members in peerreviewed international medical journals; Creation of the BCTRIMS website: www.bctrims.org.br. AWARDS BCTRIMS Aluízio Marques Award The Aluízio Marques Award is given to the best poster presented at the BCTRIMS Annual Meeting. Multiple sclerosis was first described in Latin America by Aluízio Marques, in 1923. At the time Marques a young medical student at University of Brazil, in Rio de Janeiro. During his vacations and a visit to a hospital ward in Recife, where his uncle Juan Marques delivered medical care and taught Internal Medicine, he observed a patient with spastic paralysis, nystagmus, and intention tremor, the characteristics clinical triad of the disease, as he had learned from Charcot s writings. His observations were then published in Jornal de Medicina, in Pernambuco. With a special interest in disease of the central nervous system Aluízio Marques made a lot of important contributions to Brazilian neurology. In 1943 he described the first cases of Devic s neuromyelitis optica in Latin America.
