Please remember those in the armed services keeping us safe. We also pray for all who have died serving our country, that they may be welcomed into paradise, where they will live forever with God. Brigid s Crossing is both a residential and educational program for teen mothers and their children. To name just a few of their services, the program provides safe supportive structured living, counseling, education, life skills training, parenting education and support.

PRAYER AND REFLECTION For the Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time Read Mark 4:35-40 June 21, 2015 Is there anyone here who has never been afraid? Who has never experienced chaos or wondered who s in control of things? Today s readings speak to these ancient feelings of powerlessness. We may know more about the vast universe and nature s weather patterns, but we are stopped in our tracks by life s storms and the chaos they can bring. We have to rely on someone greater than ourselves to get us through the storms. In today s Gospel, Jesus is the voice of power spoken into the chaos at sea. And it is his voice that speaks calm into the chaos that invades our lives. Today we are reminded that only God is in control. We present now our many needs and concerns to God, whose love is everlasting. For the church, that it may speak the voice of Christ wherever there is chaos we pray, For peace, justice and civility in a world where there is often chaos in politics, religion, the environment and the economy we pray, For those who work to bring calm to others: for parents and caretakers; counselors and confessors; social workers and teachers, mediators and diplomats we pray, For all fathers and stepfathers; grandfathers and godfathers; for all men who serve and nurture young people for their strength and tenderness, courage and wisdom, generosity and faithfulness we pray, For the sick, the dying and the grieving; and for those who have died we pray, Prayer God of the universe, we are often called to give courage and strength to others when we ourselves feel powerless and afraid. Help us to remember that our strength is in you, the source of all power. We ask these things in the name of your Son, Jesus, who rebuked the wind and calmed the storm at sea. Amen. Celebration 2015

Father Flood Cartoon for the 12th Sunday of the Year (B) Treasures from our tradition In harbor towns throughout the world, seafarers will hear today s Gospel with profound awareness of the power of a storm at sea. In Gloucester, a community of fishermen has gone down to the sea in ships for centuries, some never to return, as recounted in the book and film The Perfect Storm. In the late nineteenth century, a stranded fisherman in the North Atlantic broke an oar. Adrift, he begged Mary for help, and when he returned his story inspired the building of Our Lady of Good Voyage Church. Over the years, grateful sailors have surrounded the pews with models of their ships. Between the twin towers, a statue of Our Lady holds a vessel in her upraised hand as a symbol of a safe voyage. It is visible to home-coming sailors from the harbor s entrance. For centuries, sailors have looked to Mary as Stella Maris, Star of the Sea. Indeed, that is possibly the most ancient title of Mary. In Aramaic, the language of Jesus, the words Our Lady sound similar to the word meaning pilot or leader, someone who could lead one to safety. Certainly a treasure of our tradition is how Mary points the way to her Son, the one who calmed the sea and accompanies us to safe harbor. Acalme-se! XII Dom TC (Ano B): Jó 38,1.8-11; Sl 106(107); 2Cor 5,14-17; Mc 4,35-41. O trecho do Evangelho deste domingo (Mc 4, 35-41) faz parte de uma seção maior onde Jesus revela seu poder sobre a natureza, a possessão demoníaca (5, 1-20), a doença (5, 25-34) e a morte (5, 21 24, 35-43). A questão sobre a identidade de Jesus, fundamental no Evangelho de Marcos, aparece na expressão que encerra a passagem, quando os discípulos indagam, Quem é esse homem, a quem até o vento e o mar obedecem? Ao controlar as forças da natureza, Jesus faz o mesmo que Deus faz quando derrota as forças que ameaçam a vida (cf. Sl 107, 23-32). A ordem de Jesus ao vento e ao mar, Cale-se! Acalmese!, faz lembrar uma ordem semelhante dada por Jesus ao um espírito mau quando libertou um homem possuído por forças demoníacas (cf. 1, 25). O mar não só representa a instabilidade, o desconhecido e o caos, mas também as forças do mal que atentam contra a vida humana. Sobre elas, Jesus demonstra seu poder. Ao questionar os discípulos dizendo, Por que vocês são tão medrosos? Vocês ainda não têm fé?, Jesus faz a mais dura desaprovação aos díscipulos até o momento no Evangelho de Marcos. Não fica claro se o questionamento se refere a falta de fé nele ou em Deus. Se há falta de fé em Deus, os discípulos deveriam demostrar confiança em Deus, assim como Jesus demonstra (cf. 4, 38). Se há falta de fé em Jesus, os discípulos já deveriam confiar nele e não cair no desespero. O mundo moderno em que vivemos é caracterizado pelo desenvolvimento científico e tecnológico que busca controlar as forças da natureza. No entanto, hoje, o mal que atenta contra a vida humana parece não estar no campo da natureza, mas nas ações egoísticas e gananciosas do ser humano, cujo apetite incontrolável de alguns coloca em risco a vida de tantos outros e o próprio mundo. Diante das ameaças de morte geradas pela ambição humana, o Evangelho de hoje nos consola e sustenta, afirmando que o poder de Deus em Jesus Cristo é vencedor de todas as forças do mal. Oração Senhor Jesus Cristo, a quem até o vento e o mar obedecem, daí-nos a serenidade e a confiança necessárias para enfrentar os perigos e mal que atentam contra a beleza da vida. Amém. Pe. Jonas D.
