Is there room for imagination nowadays? Are there other ways to perceive the world? Are there alternative ways of being in the world through artistic experience? Could we invent (or rescue) more ludic, poetic, sensitive, silent and (why not) amateur approaches to deal with those issues with people at large? What does political reinvention really would mean from the perspective(s) of art? How could art best contribute to that reinvention? Living in a place where inequality reigns in all aspects of life, wish (perhaps utopic) is to commune such imagination with broader audiences not so focused on contemporary art trends, being in mind the rich, diverse and emancipated spectators we all are, regardless of education background, social class or cultural identity. Life is broader. So is art. Alice Shintani Sao Paulo, Brazil (under coup d etat), 2017.

tuiuiú, 2017 / handpainted flags inspired on athos bulcão s tiles installed in Brasilia government buildings during military dictatorship. around 200 flags were installed inline among mario de andrade public library + dom josé gaspar square + aber (brazilian association of binding and restoration) and shared for free with pedestrian public. the intervention were not negotiated with local military police officers.
there were about fifty homeless people living in the square, but we did not want to go on sort of assistentialism art, neither falling into escapist aesthetics to deny the reality of that place. We wanted to get out of that dichotomy and try other relationships, even though we know that the ethic and aesthetic limits of art are always very tenuous. tuiuiú, 2017. intervention on public space in collaboration with sem título s.d. collective + dom josé gaspar square + mario de andrade library + aber (brazilian association of binding and restoration), são paulo, brazil.

alice shintani são paulo, brazil, 1971. lives and works in são paulo. alice works from an expanded idea of painting as starting point to imagine forms of approaching to the emancipated other and to reflect on the possibilities of aesthetic experience: how it is constructed; where and how we can access it in order to dislocate something? Defending the idea that such experience exists beyond the established art system, Shintani transits between different contexts from art gallery to the warehouse of neighbourhood market, from the home kitchen to the sidewalk of a public square interested in diminishing the distances and meanings between poetic and political gestures. alice is granddaughter of Japanese immigrants, graduated in Computer Engineering at University of Campinas in 1993 and was an active mountaineering and rock climbing practitioner before moving to arts in the early 2000s. Her practice has been shown in major Brazilian museums, institutes and galleries as well as shared in streets, public spaces and social networks. solo exhibitions 2017 menas, galeria marcelo guarnieri, são paulo. 2013 o cru e o cozido, galeria marcelo guarnieri, ribeirão preto. 2012 hanafuda, galeria mercedes viegas, rio de janeiro. 2011 bakemono, casa triângulo, são paulo. 2010 sinopse, galeria mercedes viegas, rio de janeiro. 2009 ether, galeria virgilio, são paulo. 2008 alice shintani, galeria marcelo guarnieri, ribeirão preto. 2016 olhar incomum, museu oscar niemeyer, curitiba. 2014 survival adaptations, aggregate space gallery, oakland, usa; momento contemporâneo, instituto figueiredo ferraz, ribeirão preto; 65o salão paranaense, mac paraná, curitiba. 2013 utropic, centre of contemporary art, poznan, poland; novas aquisições, palacio do itamaraty, brasília. 2012 técnicas de desaparecimento, havana/guantanamo, cuba. 2010 edições, casa triângulo, são paulo. 2009 rumos artes visuais trilhas do desejo, instituto itaú cultural, são paulo / ecco, brasília / paço imperial, rio de janeiro. 2008 nova arte nova, centro cultural banco do brasil rio de janeiro and são paulo. + http://aliceshintani.info + http://instagram.com/aliceshintani + http://fb.com/aliceshintani
