In this lesson today, this is lesson six of the Blues Lead Guitar series. In this lesson we are going to be looking at Position Two of the Minor Pentatonic scale. Now please be sure that you have got your Position One down and you can use it and you can play your licks and you are ready for Position Two before you get going on this. Much better to be able to play a solo using one position then to be able to go up and down lots of positions and not be able to actually use them. Olá. Como estás. Eu sou o Justin. This lesson we are going to talk about Position Two, the different fingering options you have got, where the extra little cool notes are and few little tricks around this scale. Lets start by getting into a close up and make sure you have got the actual scale up and and down correctly. Now we are going to be starting this one here with our first finger on the seventh fret of the fourth string. This is the lowest root note. It's really important that you practice these scales starting and finishing on the lowest root note and not the lowest note of the scale. This is because you will start to hear where the scale comes from and you will hear the tonal centre. Cá estamos na Segunda Posição da Escala Pentatónica de Lá Menor. We are going to start here with the first finger... Then we have got the fourth finger on the tenth fret... First finger seventh fret of the third string... Third finger, ninth fret, third string... Now I am going to show you some other options for this later, but for now we are going to do the first finger, eighth fret, second string... Third finger tenth fret, second string... First finger, eighth fret, first string... Third finger on the tenth fret of the first string... Straight back down that again... Now one of the most common fingering issues for this is when we got onto the second string and the first string. Now some people think it is better to use the second and fourth fingers on the notes on the first and second strings up here. Now if you are playing in certain circumstances it is better and if you are doing really technical stuff it can be useful as well. So it would be worth practising sometimes using this fingering as I will show you now. I am just going to show you the top half of this scale now... Second finger... to fourth finger... Now the advantage, of course, is that your hand does not have to shift anywhere. Well the reason is that very often you are going to be bending on this note here which is the tenth fret of the thinnest string... This is a really common note to bend, and we
know that bending with your little finger is very hard and not very productive. So you generally want to have your third finger on that spot... It's are really common thing to be using those fingers... So you can see there straight away you've got a nice little vibrato there using your third finger as well. Occasionally... Doing little patterns you might want to use your second and fourth fingers there, but generally you want to be using your first and third fingers there for this bit... One of the things that is really important when you are practising your scales is knowing what notes you can bend and how far you should bend them if you are going to. Now Position Two is a little bit funny because some of the notes in there are ones that you have to be a bit careful with bending on. The first two notes, we are starting of course on the fourth string here... That note that we come to with the little finger is the note C. This is the third, or the minor third, in the key of A. This is the note that you might remember from earlier lessons that you might want to put a curl on the note C. You can bend that note and you only have to bend it a tone, but because it is on the fourth string, which is a bit weird, and the fact it's with your little finger, you might find it awkward to get a bend on. So it's quite an uncommon note to bend, but a very common note to curl, to get... You might end up doing curls with the little finger but a very unusual one to bend. Esta é a nota de que falamos em lições anteriores e que vale a pena ter em consideração fazer curl, uma espécie de bending mais atenuado. Pode-se fazer bending com esta nota até pelo menos um tom mas, como ela está na quarta corda, o que é estranho, não é fácil fazer o bending com o quarto dedo. Por isso é pouco comum fazer-se bending nesta nota. Mas é uma nota comum para se tocar e atingir fazendo curl, o que se pode fazer com o quarto dedo mas, bending já é mais difícil. If we look at the notes on the next two strings we have got the D and the E with the first and and third fingers... The note here, the E, if you are going to do a bend on that you have to bend that a minor third. Which means three frets higher. So... Quite a big bend and quite an unusual bend as well. Even though that note could have the
bend it would be a minor third, which is quite far. You can bend it a tone a little later on if you are getting into Dorian Mode but it tends to be an unusual one to bend. As notas nas duas próximas cordas são Ré e Mi, com o primeiro e terceiro dedos... se for para fazer um bending no Mi tem que se fazer o bending até uma terceira menor. O que significa 3 casas mais a cima. É... portanto um bending bastante grande, pouco frequente também. Contudo pode-se na mesma faze-lo apesar da distância. Pode-se fazer um bending de um tom se vamos chegar ao Modo Dórico mas, na mesma é um bending pouco usual. If you are getting a bit confused there, oh no, Dorian Mode! He's using his funny tricks there again. The Dorian Mode in the key of A would simply mean that we are using the note F sharp, which is a very cool and funky note to use in the A blues, but not one that I want to get into using just yet. A, of course, being the root note. That note is a very, very dangerous one to bend because if you don't bend it enough you are going to get into real horrible notes like the A sharp, or B flat, which is possibly the worst note that you could play in a A blues. If you were going to do a bend on the note A with the third finger on the second string you have to make sure that you either bend it a tone, up to the note B, which gives you a ninth... But it's little bit of a weird note to bend to be honest. Bending to the ninth you have to be a bit careful with. Or you have to bend to the minor third, up to the note C... Which sounds cool but it is quite a big bend. Those of you just starting out on your blues guitar I would recommend not doing a bend on that note rather than risking bending a funny one. So, possible but unlikely. Já estamos na segunda corda... temos aqui as notas Sol e Lá. Lá é a nota tónica, não te esqueças. Esta é um nota muito, muito perigosa para se fazer bending porque se isso não for bem feito, vamos obter notas horríveis como Lá sustenido, ou Si bemol, que são as piores coisas que se pode tocar num blues em Lá. Next, on the thinnest string, the last that we are going to look at bending, because we are not really going to talk about bending on the thickest two strings because it is very, very rare. We have got here the notes C and D. If you remember C is the note that is very likely we would put a curl on. You get a bit of practise here doing a first finger curl which would be there, first finger on the eighth fret... Doing a little curl up there, it's like a little quarter tone bend if you like. The other note on the thinnest string is the note D, with the third finger on the tenth fret. And that's a very good note to bend up a tone...

I am going to go through and show you some licks in the next lesson but to start off with we want to be playing that scale up and down, just straight up and down, making sure you are using your alternate picking, starting with the down pick of course. And being aware that there are these other fingering options. That's really important as a lot of these licks are going to use fingering that is wrong fingers, but remember that when it comes to playing your actual solos the fingering doesn't really matter so much, it's just the notes that matter. Also being aware that we have only got that really big bend there on the thinnest string with the third finger. That's a good note to bend. And the other ones you have to treat with a little bit of caution. It is possible to bend them but I don't recommend that you start learning to bend them because they might lead you to a bad place. In other words, bad notes. É importante lembrar que temos o grande bending aqui na primeira corda com o terceiro dedo. É uma boa nota para se fazer bending.
