Task 2a Interaction scientists-conservators: seminar on Theory and Practice in Conservation in Lisbon, May 4-5 2006, LNEC. The identification of good practices in conservation is the main aim of Task 2. One of the most important tasks of this networking activity is to disseminate a modern conservation behaviour in which the interaction between conservators and scientist becomes a usual and valuable practice, well established in Europe. Unfortunately, several times these possible interactions are only partial or even neglected. As a first step OPD (Task 2 Responsible) decided to launch an e-forum on the actual interaction between restorers and scientists in the field of conservation of works of art. The intention was to gather information among professionals in order to identify and discuss problems on this topic, searching for ways of improvements. Moreover, being the opportunities for broad in-depth discussion between restorers and scientists relatively few, the Forum could be a chance for constructive and potentially beneficial communication. First a mailing list of around 600 European scientists and restorers was set up. Then two letters (see Annex 1 and 2) signed by N2 Activity Convenor, were sent to the mailing list. It is planned to manage the e-forum via e-mail. The steps towards the establishment of the e-forum are the following: Creation of a webpage for a Bulletin Board Registration of participants with ID and Password to access the Forum; Proposal of the topics for the discussion (see above) Specific topics of discussion will be: Impact of conservation science Relationship between restorers and scientists Importance of publications (journals, proceedings of congresses) Participation to meetings, congresses, etc. Relationship between conservation institutions and scientific laboratories. The e-forum is expected to be operative within the next months. The most relevant initiative of the second year to promote better interactions between the world of scientists and that of conservators was the organisation of an international seminar where many of the most representative professionals in the various fields (art-historian, restores, scientists, etc) were invited to discuss together common themes on conservation. This Seminar was organised, by LNEC (Portugal), just after the Second Eu-ARTECH Annual Meeting, and was entitled Theory and Practice in Conservation: a tribute to Cesare Brandi, Lisbon, May 4 th -5 th 2006. Matias Ramos, President of LNEC, B.G. Brunetti Coordinator of Eu- ARTECH and J. Delgado Rodrigues President of the Organizing Committee. After the welcome addresses, C. Bon Valsassina, Director of the Istituto Centrale per il Restauro in Rome, started the Seminar presenting the history of the Institute founded by Cesare Brandi in 1939. After her, Jukka Jokilehto, from ICCROM, presented his talk: What about Brandi s theory today? Finally, Mauro Matteini spoke on the theme- From reversibility to durability: the passivating treatment with ammonium oxalate for the protection of outdoor monuments.an art-historian, an expert in conservation and a scientists. This was the beginning of a meeting whose character was the joining together of art-historians, architects, archaeologists, conservators, restorers and conservation scientists, all discussing on a common topic: the theory and practice of conservation. The Seminar lasted two full days with several interventions of prestigious European experts. It should be too long to mention all the numerous talks and qualified speakers (see the agenda). However, it is worth noting that the Seminar raised an outstanding interest, as witnessed by the high number of presented works and prestige of the speakers. The major domains of conservation (paintings, architecture, and archaeology remains) were addressed; the subject varied from fundamental theoretical discussions to practical casestudies, including valuable results from scientific research. The papers presented were collected in a book that is one important deliverable for the planned Eu-ARTECH networking activities of the second year. One of the main objective of Eu-ARTECH was to establish improved contacts among scientists and conservators (as well as curators and archaeologists) with internal and external infrastructures operating in the field. This meeting certainly improved contacts and exchange of knowledge among Eu-ARTECH and other relevant external European institutions, including private SME s. Another relevant Eu-ARTECH objective was to improve and facilitate encounters between the different figures that operate in the field of conservation, such as conservators and scientists, as well as art-historians and archaeologists. From this point of view, the seminar was again a success. It is certainly unusual (but fully productive) to have different professional figures discussing on common general theoretical and practical themes, such as the filling of lacunae, the way to share decisions, the way to solve the problems of patinas, etc.. The odeon was highly representative of the activities of conservation in Europe. Therefore, the Seminar was a great opportunity for Eu-ARTECH to diffuse knowledge, especially on the Transnational Access activities that were presented by the Coordinator. The lectures provoked interesting discussions among the international audience, especially on problems where sometimes curators, conservators and scientists manifested different points of view, such as the definition and treatment of patinas or the definition of instruments for decisions. All the interventions are reported in the Book of Proceedings (520 pages), edited by J.Delgado and J.Mimoso (LNEC). The Book, distributed to all participants, is available on request.
