AREAS OF SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY Body Image; Self-Regulation of Weight-Related Behaviors (Eating and Exercise Behaviors); Obesity and Weight Control; Physical Activity Adherence and Motivation. 4. DOMAIN OF SPECIALIZATION Sport and Exercise Sciences; Behavioral Sciences 5. CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS
Body Image: Body image dimensions (evaluative/dissatisfaction, and dysfunctional investment/overconcern with appearance); Body image role in behavioral weight control interventions - pretreatment correlates, body image change, and correlates of change; Body image interactions with eating self-regulation and physical activity; Body image role in physical activity adherence. Self-Regulation of Weight-Related Behaviors (Eating and Exercise Behaviors): Physical Activity and the Self-Regulation of Eating Behavior and Body Weight; Moderators and Mediators (e.g., body image, depressive mood, self-regulatory variables). Obesity and Weight Management: Obesity treatment with lifestyle behavioral interventions; Moderators and mediators (i.e., predictors) of success and attrition; Motivational factors in exercise and weight loss; Self-Determination Theory. Physical Activity Adherence: Individual correlates of participation (i.e., moderators); Motivational issues and the process of self-regulation and long-lasting behavior adoption; Physical Activity and well-being in the overweight and obese. 6. PARTICIPATION IN RESEARCH PROJECTS As an investigator at the Exercise and Health Department of the Faculty of Human Kinetics, Eliana Carraça was initially involved in the PESO II trial (2004-2009) as an Exercise and Physical Activity Specialist. Carraça was involved in the planning and implementation of several exercise/fitness sessions (2 nd and 3 rd cohorts), participated in data assessment periods, supervising the exercise and physical activity data collection between 2008 and 2009. In 2010-2011, Carraça was also involved in the management of the PESO II database. During the implementation of the PESO II trial (2004-2009), Carraça was involved in several studies examining predictors of success in weight management. In particular, Carraça was involved in the study of past physical activity and dieting behaviors as pretreatment predictors of success in weight control and physical activity adherence, research which was later integrated in her Master thesis. Carraça also participated in the organization and implementation of exercise sessions integrated into a follow-up project, PESO Comunitário (seasons V and VI). In parallel, Eliana Carraça participated in the idealization and development of PESO & MEDIDA (www.pesoemedida.com), a website structured to constitute a reference for health professionals and community dwellers in the field of obesity and associated behaviors. Eliana Carraça also participated as an exercise and fitness specialist in the program RITUAIS, codeveloped by the company One-to-One and the Faculty of Human Kinetics, Department of Exercise & Health. In 2009, Eliana Carraça participated in the writing of a grant regarding the project Physical Activity and the Self-Regulation of Eating Behavior and Body Weight, which was later funded by the Science and Technology Foundation (FCT)(PTDC/DES/114867/2009: 103.000 ). Finally, since 2008, Eliana Carraça has been involved in several studies exploring the role of body image in the context of weight management and associated behaviors, which are part of her Doctoral Dissertation (Ph.D. granted in July 2012).
