3 Curatorial concept Following our previous participation in Art Dubai Modern with two of the most distinguish artists from the Portuguese-speaking countries and due to the amazing reaction of the public to their artworks, we will be showing their artworks once again allowing a wider perspective about this two great masters from Africa. The importance of this two artists come at a time when the discussion about centers and peripheries is on the agenda, it is increasingly recognized the importance of new ideas and aesthetics coming from the periphery. It is also necessary to go after the ancestry of thought and creation, woven outside the western circuit, outside the reigning historical consensus, to establish a new global order, embracing, fair and unequivocal. We walk to the abandonment of a reductionist denominator of Euro- American centrality, as a phenomenon of poignant development and in this context, it becomes really important to show Africa and the modern and contemporary manifestations of its diversity. In this case, the Africa that Mozambique and Cape Verde contains and that is certainly distinctive from the one that the other countries on this gigantic continent contain. Expose the African artists is something urgent. Especially the ones most deeply rooted in their heritage and that were able to establish a new way of artistic creation. Especially the ones that have contributed to the emergence of other contemporary visual languages in their country, capable of assimilating a contemporary and international environment that is often hostile to anyone that doesn t come from the Western centralism. This principle embodies both artists: Ernesto Shikhani and Manuel Figueira. Both are founders of an international Africa. An Africa which transcends all stereotypes, to renew itself without falling into myriad, without falling into the temptation to flee to modern places, ephemeral in technologies and with mutant visual languages. From Ernesto Shikani, we present a core of artworks produced by the artist in the 70 s, 80 s and 90 s that demonstrates a constant search for new ways in his own journey, as an artist and as a man concerned about the issues that were put to the contemporary African societies. In his work Shikhany makes us realize the importance of a search for cultural identity and knowledge as inherent values in a sustained and sustainable development. From Manuel Figueira, we present artworks made before 2000, where the author creates very own and unrepeatable narratives, involving human (trans)figuration all the time. Artworks with a Surrealist atmosphere and also an incredible tapestry, which joins from African and Western motifs to Islamic visual forms, in their geometrizing composition and a group of emblematic works made during the colonial period in Cape Verde. 3

5 Ernesto Shikhani MOZAMBIQUE MOÇAMBIQUE Nasceu em 1934 em Moçambique e morreu em Começou a dedicar-se à escultura no Núcleo de Arte (Maputo) com o mestre escultor português Lobo Fernandes. Em 1963, torna-se assistente do Professor Silva Pinto. Contemporâneo dos reconhecidos artistas moçambicanos Malangatana e Chissano. A sua obra não é subsidiária de nenhum estilo: nela estão patentes, mais do que as suas raízes, sinais de um percurso muito próprio. Apresentando-se convictamente como nacionalista, enfrentou diversos obstáculos, perseguindo sempre ideais de liberdade. A sua pintura mais recente apresenta traços e cores muitas vezes agressivos, vibrantes, e irradiantes de luz. As suas formas são exuberantes, e minuciosas. A partir de 1970 começa a dedicar-se à escultura. A sua primeira exposição individual dá-se em Em 1973, recebe uma bolsa da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian para realizar uma exposição individual. Até 1979 orienta aulas de Desenho no Auditório-Galeria, na cidade da Beira. Em 1982, recebe uma bolsa de estudo de seis meses, na ex- URSS. Em 2004 a Perve Galeria realizou uma exposição retrospetiva dos seus 40 anos de Pintura e Escultura onde também foi exibido um vídeo-documentário sobre si, realizado por Cabral Nunes entre 1999 e 2004, que aborda o seu percurso plástico e vivencial, com entrevistas e imagens das suas obras de arte pública. Ainda por intermédio da Perve Galeria, participa nas feiras Arte Lisboa, 2004, 2005 e 2010, e Arte Madrid, 2006 e A sua obra está representada em diversas coleções públicas e privadas, no seu país, na Índia, nos Emirados Árabes Unidos, na Tunísia, em Espanha, França, Portugal e Reino Unido. Destaque para as obras incluídas nas coleções do Museu Nacional de Arte de Moçambique, Culturgest - Grupo Caixa Geral de Depósitos (Lisboa), Centro de Estudos de Surrealismo/Fundação Cupertino de Miranda (Portugal) e na Colecção Lusofonias, que a Perve Galeria dedica à arte moderna e contemporânea dos países de língua oficial portuguesa. No âmbito da itinerância desta colecção, a obra de Shikhani foi apresentada em Lisboa 2009 e 2010, em Dakar 2010, no Palácio do Egipto, em Oeiras 2012/13 e na Índia, A sua obra foi ainda seleccionada para ser apresentada na secção de Arte Moderna da Art Dubai, uma das mais importantes feiras de arte do mundo, que teve lugar nos Emirados Árabes Unidos em Março de Ernesto Shikhani was born in 1934 and died in 2010 in Mozambique. He began to devote himself to sculpture with the Portuguese master sculptor Lobo Fernandes at the Art center. In 1963, he become Professor s Silva Pinto assistant. He was contemporary of the recognized Mozambican artists Malangatana and Chissano. His work is not subsidiary of any style, more than its roots, there are signs of a very personal path. Presenting itself as strongly nationalist, faced many obstacles, always chasing ideals of freedom. His latest paintings show traces and colors often aggressive, vibrant with radiant light. Their shapes are lush and detailed. From 1970 he begins to concentrate on sculpture. His first solo exhibition toke place in 1968 in Mozambique s capital city. In 1973, he received a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to hold a solo exhibition in Lisbon. Until 1979 he have directed drawing classes at the Auditorium-Gallery in the city of Beira, Mozambique. In 1982, he was given a six-month scholarship in the former USSR. In 2004, Perve Galeria held a retrospective exhibition of his 40 years of painting and sculpture. Also showned was a video documentary directed by Cabral Nunes between 1999 and 2004, which addresses his plastic and experiential journey. His work started to be represented by Perve Galeria in 2004 and was presented in art fairs such as Art Lisboa, in 2004 and 2005, Art Madrid, 2006 and 2007, Hot Art Basel, 2008 and Art Dubai, His work is represented in the National Museum of Art of Mozambique, Collection of African CGD Art, Lisbon, Surrealism Studies Center / Cupertino de Miranda Foundation and several private collections within and outside of his country.
