The annual black tie-optional event with red carpet paparazzi welcome, banquet, and awards ceremony attracted more than 400 community members, business leaders and officials to raise $133,000 for MAPS' culturally and linguistically competent health and social services for Portuguese speakers. In keeping with the Marathon atmosphere, the event theme this year was Going the Distance for a Stronger Community. Award recipients line up on stage with presenters, Co-hosts & MAPS leaders "At MAPS, our Marathon is serving the Portuguese-speaking communities," said Paulo Pinto, MPA, MAPS Executive Director. MAPS awards were presented to five outstanding individuals for their service and many contributions to the communities that MAPS serves in greater Boston and beyond. This year for the first time, each award was highlighted by a 1-minute video interview of the recipient. Links to Gala videos and photos are available at The MAPS Person of the Year Award went to Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, for his community leadership, support of many pro-immigrant measures, and his concern for the safety, health and wellbeing of his constituents. He said that his main focus was on social progress and improving the lives of those who live and work in Somerville. MAPS Manuel N. Coutinho Outstanding Volunteer Award was presented to António (Thony) Alves, owner of Thony s Barbershop in Roxbury, by Hopkinton Selectman John Coutinho, son of the late Manuel Coutinho. Paulo Pinto Named Finalist for MNN Nonprofit Excellence Award Our Executive Director, Paulo Pinto, MPA, has been selected as a finalist of the MA Nonprofit Network s (MNN s) 2015 Nonprofit Excellence Award in the Leadership Category! The Excellence Awards are presented annually at the State House on Nonprofit Awareness Day (NAD), a state holiday signed into law by Gov. Patrick in This year s celebration will be held on Monday, June 8. MNN received hundreds of nominations from across the state and from every nonprofit sub sector. These nominations were reviewed by a panel of judges who then chose just a few exceptional finalists in each of the eight award categories. Pinto was nominated along with four other very accomplished nonprofit leaders, and the winner will be announced at the NAD. Cordel do Abraço earns MAPS employee Robson Lemos the Brazilian Press Award for Best Video MAPS Men s Health Educator and actor extraordinaire Robson Lemos won the Brazilian International Press Award on May 9 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the Best Video category for Cordel do Abraço, a satirical tale about the myths surrounding HIV and the importance of prevention and safe sex. The story was originally created as a special play for the MAPS 2013 World AIDS Day event, and the video was co-produced by Leo Tatara and Victor Berardinelli from Image Works. MAPS Advocates Receive CLSACC Award MAPS Advocates Dulce DePina and Fania Resendes were honored by the Community Legal Services and Counseling Center (CLSACC) with the Dr. Joseph H. Brenner Award! According to the CLSACC, in working with CLSACC staff and volunteers, Dulce and Fania each support their clients through the legal process. They become an integral part of an advocacy effort from intake to resolution. They are always available to interpret, explain, gather documents, and perform any task needed to get the job done. CLSSC noted, They each have a broad range of knowledge and skills. Their understanding of the legal process and emotional impact on clients, their calm responses and analyses in the middle of crises, and their warm and gentle demeanor help clients through the most difficult times. DePina and Resendes Board Updates The MAPS Board of Directors has elected its new officers. Paula Coutinho, LICSW, is the new Board President, with Filipe Zamborlini as the Vice-President. Raymond Estrella, MBA, took charge once again as Treasurer; and Patrícia de Oliveira, is the new Secretary. We also thank, Joseph J. Vasconcelos, who recently left the Board after many years of remarkable contributions, including as the Board President. Staff Updates Our warmest welcome to our two new staffers: Elen Peixoto, Brighton Office Assistant, and Brighton Office Advocate Edna da Costa. We also congratulate Isidro Fagundes on his promotion to Cambridge Office Manager and Communications Assistant, and wish the best of luck to former Men s Health Educator Leonardo Rezende, who returned to his native Brazil. "We may be a barber shop by trade, but we are a community center by function," said Alves, (left) an immigrant from Cabo Verde. Manny Rogers, Jr. presented the MAPS Mary & Manuel Rogers Lifetime Community Service Award, named after his late parents, to Joel Schwartz (right), longtime Board member of Cape Verdean Community UNIDO, founder of the 10-year-old annual Cape Verdean-Jewish Passover Seder in Boston, and founding Director of the Moving from Debts to Assets Program. "This award is for doing things all the time that bring me such joy anyway," he said. "I get my award every day, and this is just something very special." Rui Domingos (left), CEO of the Naveo Credit Union, was honored with the MAPS Álvaro Lima Outstanding Business Award at the Gala for the outstanding success and innovation of this 87-year-old financial institution, which recently changed its name from CPCU Credit Union. Elsa Gomes-Bondlow, Director of Development at MIRA Coalition and a former MAPS employee, represented Álvaro Lima in presenting the award. "We like to think we are partners in the community," said Domingos, who credited Naveo's Board of Directors and account holders for making the credit union's success and community support possible. "It is because of you we are here tonight and we are able to help MAPS." Joshua Fidalgo presented the MAPS Jorge Fidalgo Community Service Award named after his father to Natalicia Tracy (right), Executive Director of the Brazilian Immigrants Center (BIC) since 2010 and a founder of the Massachusetts Coalition for Domestic Workers. Tracy received the award for her outstanding leadership on workers rights including her successful legislative advocacy for passage of the first Domestic Workers Bill of Rights, which went into effect on April 1 in Massachusetts. "Because of a dream, today over 100,000 domestic workers in Massachusetts have rights that they were deprived of for over 75 years!" said, Tracy (right), adding that advocates hope to win similar success in Connecticut. This year's event was presented, as it was last year, by the three Dunkin' Donuts franchises that make up the Gala's Diamond Sponsor-Cafua Management Group, Couto Management Group and Riverside Management Group, owned by the Cafua, Couto, Carvalho and Rodrigues families. "We do this because we see and deeply appreciate the good work that MAPS does in our communities," said Duarte Carvalho (left), CEO, President and Principal of Riverside Management, speaking on behalf of the Diamond Sponsor groups. During the evening, the crowd was treated to a bossa nova show by the Brazilian-themed group Receita de Samba, entertained by Cabo Verdean singer Lutchinha, and soothed by Portuguese Fado singer Catarina Avelar with guitarists, in addition to music by DJ Manny Morais. The event also included a Silent Auction with a variety of donated items, including a round-trip airfare to Portugal, donated by SATA Airlines. MAPS raised additional funds by raffling four prizes, and winning ticket information is published on the Raffle page of the MAPS website. Filipe Zamborlini, Vice-President of the MAPS Board, who is on the staff of State Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz, and former staff member Elisangela Almeida, a local actress and model, were the Gala co-hosts. Raising Sexual Assault Awareness in the Community April marked Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) across the country, raising awareness about sexual violence and educating individuals and communities about prevention. MAPS offices honored SAAM with special displays and messages, while MAPS Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault staff attended a variety of events made to educate the community about the issue. MAPS offers free, confidential assistance for sexual assault and domestic violence survivors in four of its six offices. MAPS Honors the White Ribbon Day Campaign MAPS honored the 2015 White Ribbon Day (WRD) Campaign with a series of activities that we held or participated in during the month of March, including a special presentation at Oliveira s Brazilian Restaurant in Everett, the statewide WRD event at the MA State House, the City of Lowell s Annual White Ribbon event, a Night of Poetry at the MAPS Somerville office, and the MAPS March staff meeting in Somerville. In all these occasions, men of all ages were invited to take the WRD pledge, either in Our Director of Development and Communications, Lois Josimovich, shared exciting news about our new state-of-the-art MAPS client database with representatives of more than 30 local organizations at the Community Health Network Area (CHNA) 17 s 2015 Annual Showcase on May 14, in Waltham. CHNA helped fund development of this great new agency tool by EmpowerDB, which is scheduled for launch on July 1. MAPS staff at the Statewide WRD event at the MA State House English or in Portuguese: From this day forward, I promise to be part of the solution in ending violence against women. WRD is an international campaign to urge boys and men to take part in ending violence against women. MAPS Lowell Office Promotes Social Change with Theater Workshop Participants in the ongoing Theater Workshops at the MAPS Lowell Office (11 Mill Street) are finding a unique space to discuss questions of health, violence, culture, racism, relationships, family, and other sensitive topics through acting exercises. 7 VOZ DA COMUNIDADE SPRING 2015 Page 7 MAPS Runs Senior Housing Needs Assessment & Feasibility Study MAPS is looking at the feasibility of providing housing for our aging seniors with some type of supportive services to allow our seniors to age in place, such as assisted living, supportive housing, or other residential alternatives for our Portuguese-speaking seniors, somewhere between Lowell and Boston. We re exploring many possibilities from raising money for a new or renovated residential building, to collaborating with other organizations that are already running such residences, so we can better assist the growing group of Brazilian, Portuguese, Cabo Verdean and other elders we serve. Working with an experienced consultant, LDS Consulting Group, LLC, and a generous grant from the Theodore Edson Parker Foundation, we Public forum at the MAPS Cambridge Senior Center in May ran a series of public forums this spring to hear questions and thoughts from the community. Attendees were asked to fill out a survey on this subject, which was also available online for the general public. Mrs. Neuza Maria can now get in touch online with her family in Brazil thanks to the help from Harvard University student Shawheen Rezaei, who has been honing his Portuguese language skills while volunteering at the MAPS Cambridge Senior Center. MAPS Citizenship & Health Insurance Assistance Days We continue to offer our successful series of special drives as an extra resource for community members when applying for health insurance and/or US citizenship, in addition to the regular free assistance in our offices. And don t forget that eligible citizenship applicants can get an interest-free loan from Naveo Credit Union to help pay the citizenship application fees! For more information on the Dreamer Loan, please visit Cambridge Residents Vote on City Improvements Cambridge community organizers were at MAPS in March to help residents vote on what projects the City should include in a capital budget of $500,000. Brazil s New Consul in Boston Visits MAPS It was such a great pleasure getting to host the new Brazilian Consul General in Boston, the Honorable Glivânia Oliveira, at our Cambridge office in February! It was also a valuable opportunity to present our organization to the new Consul and to discuss how we can cooperate in the future for the betterment of our communities.

O prêmio MAPS Pessoa do Ano foi atribuído ao Presidente da Câmara/Prefeito de Somerville, Joseph A. Curtatone, em reconhecimento da sua liderança, do apoio que tem demonstrado a várias medidas pró-imigrantes, da sua preocupação com a segurança, saúde e bem-estar dos seus constituintes. Curtatone recebeu o prêmio das mãos do Diretor Executivo da MAPS, Paulo Pinto, e da Presidente da Diretoria da agência, Paula Coutinho, e reafirmou que o seu principal objetivo é o progresso social e a melhoria das vidas de todos os que vivem e trabalham em Somerville. Alves, que é nativo de Cabo Verde, tem cedido, ao longo dos anos, o seu espaço e tempo para que a MAPS ofereça ali serviços de prevenção e testes de HIV e outras doenças sexualmente transmissíveis (DST s) a centenas de homens, que, dessa forma, tomam conhecimento sobre o estado da sua saúde. Nós oficialmente somos uma barbearia, mas na prática, somos um centro comunitário, acrescentou. O prêmio MAPS Mary & Manuel Rogers de Vida Dedicada ao Serviço Comunitário foi entregue por Manny Rogers, Jr., filho do casal Rogers, a Joel Schwartz, membro de longa data da Diretoria da associação Cape Verdean Community UNIDO, fundador da Cape Verdean-Jewish Passover Seder em Boston, e fundador e diretor do Moving From Debt to Assets Program. Este prêmio reflete todas as coisas que faço diariamente e que me dão tanto prazer, disse Schwartz, acrescentando que todos os dias recebo o meu prêmio, e este é um momento muito especial. 9 VOZ DA COMUNIDADE SPRING 2015 Page 9 MAPS Realiza Estudo de Viabilidade de Habitação para Idosos A MAPS está analisando a viabilidade de oferecer moradia para os nossos idosos, incluindo alguns serviços de apoio que os permitam envelhecer em casa, como moradia assistida ou outras alternativas de habitação, em algum lugar entre Lowell e Boston. Estamos considerando várias possibilidades desde arrecadação de recursos para a construção ou reforma de um edifício residencial, à colaboração com outras organizações que já operam esse tipo de habitação, para que possamos atender melhor o crescente grupo de idosos brasileiros, caboverdianos, portugueses e de outras nacionalidades que servimos. Trabalhando com uma consultora experiente, LDS Consulting Group, LLC, e com recursos da Theodore Edson Parker Foundation, nós realizamos uma série de fóruns públicos para ouvir dúvidas e sugestões da comunidade. Os participantes puderam preencher um questionário sobre o assunto, que também esteve disponível online para quem não pode participar das reuniões. MAPS Celebra a Campanha do Laço Branco 2015 A MAPS marcou a passagem da Campanha do Dia do Laço Branco 2015 (WRD, na sigla em inglês) com uma série de atividades que organizamos ou participamos durante o mês de março, entre elas uma apresentação especial no restaurant Oliveira s, em Everett, o evento estadual WRD na State House, o evento anual do Dia do Laço Branco em Lowell, uma Noite de Poesia, no escritório da MAPS em Somerville, e na reunião bimestral dos funcionários da MAPS, também em Somerville. Em todas essas ocasiões, homens de todas as idades e estilos de vida foram convidados a fazer o Juramento do Laço Branco, fosse em inglês ou em português: A partir de hoje, eu prometo fazer parte da solução e dar fim à violência contra as mulheres. O WRD é uma campanha internacional que encoraja os homens a participarem da luta pelo fim da violência contra as mulheres.
