IBMs are also natural for management ecology because population responses emerge from how individuals interact with their environment, and environmental effects are generally easier to understand at the individual level. However, it is difficult to decide what things and processes to include in an IBM, in how much detail. It is

15 easy to make an IBM too simple to be useful for management decisions or (more often) too complicated to understand or even finish and test. Pattern-oriented modeling is a strategy for designing models with the right level of complexity to address a specific ecological problem. A variety of characteristic patterns observed in the real system are used to guide the decisions of what to include in a model. Theory for individual behavior is tested by how well the model reproduces the patterns. One example of patternoriented modeling is the design of an IBM of birds foraging and providing pest control in tropical coffee farms: how do birds decide which habitat type (forest, high-shade coffee, low-shade coffee, etc.) and prey (coffee pest beetles or other insects) to use? A second example is a river management model that simulates trout and salmon: how do fish select among feeding sites that vary in food intake and predation risk, in competition with each other and with habitat conditions changing rapidly and unpredictably? Because the individual-base, pattern-oriented approach to ecology is new, both of these projects produced results of general theoretical interest as well as site-specific management guidance. 09:40-10:00h Coffee break 10:00-11:20h Palestra 2: Towards a philosophy of modeling in ecology with special emphasis on the development and application of individual based models Rumo a uma filosofia da modelagem em ecologia com especial ênfase sobre o desenvolvimento e a aplicação de modelos baseados em indivíduos Gregory Cooper Society and the Professions Program in Ethics, Washington and Lee University, Estados Unidos As Richard Levins famously pointed out, ecological models cannot simultaneously maximize the pursuit of realism, generality and precision. Three important lessons embodied in Levins insight will be developed further in the talk. First, we must be clear about the cognitive goals that specific efforts at ecological model building are trying to achieve. Second, the pursuit of those cognitive goals may involve significant sacrifices of fidelity to the mechanistic details and empirical patterns in the phenomena under investigation; as Levins put it, our truth is the intersection of independent lies. Finally, the process of model evaluation must be calibrated to the cognitive goals that the model building efforts are trying to achieve. It makes no sense, for example, to criticize a model for its lack of fidelity to underlying mechanism if such fidelity was not an objective of the model in the first place. The talk will then apply, as time permits, the philosophy of modeling that has been developed to the strategy of individual based modeling. Some important questions about IBM include the following. What is distinctive about IBM as a model building approach? Is IMB inherently biased in the direction of certain kinds of Levins-style tradeoffs? To what extent (and under what conditions) can the products of this modeling strategy be the basis for sound environmental policy? How is model reliability in this regard to be determined (e.g. model validation, robustness analysis, etc.)? Often, in this kind of model building, there can be pretty close connections between the data used to design and/or parameterize the model and the data used to test it - just how much (and what kind) of independence must there be for predictive success to genuinely enhance the epistemic credence of the model? To what extent (and in what ways) can IBM-based policies be implemented so as to provide a concrete test of the model on which they are based?

16 11:20-12:40h Palestra 3: The new mechanical philosophy and Its implications for the philosophy and practice of ecology and ecological modeling A nova filosofia mecânica e suas implicações para a filosofia e prática da ecologia e da modelagem ecológica Stuart Glennan Butler University, Estados Unidos The past twenty years has seen the birth and rapid growth of a movement in the philosophy of science that has sometimes been called the new mechanical philosophy (NMP). The NMP argues for an approach to understanding both the world that scientists explore and the tools they use to explore it. Its core claims are (1) that most or all natural and social phenomena are produced by the operation of things called mechanisms, and (2) that scientists seek to predict, explain and control these phenomena by the construction, testing and elaboration of models of mechanisms. These two claims represent departures from philosophical orthodoxy, first in emphasizing the locality and particularity of mechanisms over the global laws and patterns and second in emphasizing that scientific knowledge is typically represented by models that are approximate and local rather than theories that are true and general. While most advocates of the NMP see its insights as being widely applicable across the sciences, philosophical efforts have been most directed toward thinking about mechanisms in molecular biology, neuroscience and, to some extent, in the social sciences. While to date relatively little work has been done in applying the NMP to ecology, the approach has promise both for providing an account of ecological theory and practice and for offering some advice on how ecological modeling and fieldwork can be integrated to provide the sort of scientific understanding that can be practically applied to problems of conservation biology. My talk will begin with a brief overview of the NMP, focusing on the question of what is a mechanism and on the relationship between particular mechanisms and causal generalizations. I will then turn to applications of this approach to ecology, discussing some examples of ecological mechanisms and of the models we use to represent them. I shall explore the following questions: 1. What distinguishes mechanistic models from other sorts of ecological models? 2. Are individualized-based models (IBMs) particularly suited for modeling ecological mechanisms? 3. What can the NMP as well as other recent work on modeling tell us about the relationship between actual ecological systems and our representations of them, and how can this understanding guide us in fruitful decision making concerning problems of conservation? 14:30-15:50h Palestra 4: Simulation framework to ecosystem network dynamics Estrutura de simulação para dinâmica de redes ecossistêmicas Alejandro Rozenfeld Integrative Biology and Global Change Group, Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Espanha

17 Advances in the development of a framework to simulate dynamics undergoing ecosystem networks are presented. In this research, we build networks of geographical spots (nodes). The links between them mimic routes allowing species to move around geographically. At each spot it takes place simultaneously the interacting dynamics between species lead by the architecture of a food web. We combine the dynamics of food-webs together with spreading due to pursuit and evasion along the geography. Besides, non-biotic interactions can be focused on by including migration restrictions displayed by the niche of each species. 15:50-17:10h Palestra 5: Autonomy as a property that defines biological individuals: a collaborative perspective Autonomia como uma propriedade que define indivíduos biológicos: uma perspectiva colaborativa Argyris Arnellos IAS-Research Centre for Life, Mind and Society, Department of Logic and Philosophy of Science, University of the Basque Country Donostia - San Sebastian, Espanha Biological individuals are usually considered as the entities that constitute the implicit or explicit point of reference for basic biological concepts such as fitness, adaptation, generation, trait, phenotype, lineage, development, natural selection and, especially, for the concept of organism. At the same time, the relevance of collaborative interactions among biological individuals (e.g., symbiotic relationships) is unquestionable, and increasingly acknowledged in the literature. We certainly believe that a more comprehensive approach to biological individuality is required and we suggest the notion of autonomy as an adequate tool for the task. Autonomy covers the main properties shown by any living system both at the constitutive dimension (metabolic self-construction : i.e., the ongoing functional self-production and re-production of a given, precarious identity or self ) and at the interactive dimension ( agency : i.e., the functional action on/through the environment, including here a potential network of interacting individuals). In this contribution the content and implications of the concept of autonomy will be specifically addressed, based on criteria related to functional integration, as achieved in different types of individuals, while also considering the interplay between constitutive and interactive levels. We apply this theoretical framework to the analysis of border-line cases of multicellularity, like Myxococus.xanthus, Cyanobacteria, Volvox.carteri, Physalia physalis and to a colony of social insects, in which it is not easy to delineate between individuals and groups or collectivities
