This passage concerns the sustainability of the MOD. O Ministério da Defesa Britânico deu outro passo significativo na direção de se tornar um departamento mais sustentável quando o Ministro da Defesa, junto com algumas das indústrias fundamentais com as quais o ministério mantém parceria, assinaram ontem um Acordo de Compras Sustentáveis. O acordo voluntário estabelece um compromisso entre o Ministério da Defesa e os seus fornecedores para trabalharem juntos no sentido de alcançar os objetivos de desenvolvimento sustentável através da educação da cadeia de fornecimento, desenvolvendo maneiras de medir a performance e compartilhando as melhores práticas. O Ministro da Defesa disse: O nosso acordo é uma poderosa declaração de intenções, estabelecendo o que nós esperamos e o que a indústria pode esperar de nós. Nosso objetivo é que o processo de compras se torne mais ecológico, mais sustentável, e que ofereça melhor valor de compra. This passage is about the situation in Darfur. Recentemente, quando o ditador militar do Sudão declarou cessar-fogo unilateral em Darfur, ele estava conduzindo a maior barganha em defesa própria da história. O Presidente Sudanês, que lidera um dos regimes mais implacáveis da África, não tentou interromper o derramamento de sangue em Darfur movido por um coração piedoso. Na verdade, ele declarou o cessarfogo por estar enfrentando uma pequena dificuldade legal. O Promotor-Chefe do Tribunal Penal Internacional pediu que o líder sudanês seja legalmente indiciado com 3 casos de genocídio. Se o Presidente for indiciado, ele terá alcançado o pouco invejável status de ser o único chefe de estado do mundo a enfrentar um inquérito criminal no Tribunal Internacional. Isto vem ferindo profundamente a dignidade do Presidente. 5 Task 1 Radio Discussion Your task is to identify the major issues in a discussion on a civilian topic and summarise in writing the views of the two speakers. You will hear the discussion twice. There will be a silence of three minutes on your CD between broadcasts and a further five minutes at the end after the second recording. You may take notes during the recordings and the three minute silence, and you must complete the task during the five minute silence after the second recording. The discussion is on the effectiveness of the UN. News Item Your task is to write the gist of a radio news item. You must identify the theme and its development through the passage. Candidates should be able to complete the summary in approximately 120 words. You will hear the passage once only, after which there will be a silence of ten minutes on your CD. You may take notes during the recording, and you must complete the task during the ten minute silence on your CD. This passage is about the British government and nuclear power. Task 3 Military Briefing Your task is to summarise a number of specific points raised during a military briefing. You will hear the briefing twice. There will be a silence of three minutes between briefings and a further ten minutes after the second recording. You may take notes during the recordings and the three minute silence, and you must complete the task during the ten minute silence after the second recording. 8 Translation of a Report Prepare a draft translation of the following report. Your report should accurately convey the content and meaning, as well as reflect the tone and the register of the passage. You are advised to spend approximately 60 minutes on this task. No politician can ever take lightly the decision to commit British forces to military action. In Afghanistan, the deployment of our Armed Forces was in response to an attack on our national interests that is every bit as unambiguous as the threat presented by the invasion of Belgium in 1914 and the invasion of Poland in /11, lest we ever forget, was a crime by Al Qaida against the entire civilised world. It was the largest and most spectacular in a series of attacks from embassies to night clubs, from Kenya to Bali and a worldwide campaign of terror. And they possessed a common thread - indiscriminate violence. They demonstrated a total disregard for the innocent, for race, nationality, and even religion. It was a strategy designed to provoke disproportionate retaliation, to polarise countries, peoples and religions. But far from creating division, 9/11 brought the world together, led by the United Nations, to tackle terrorism at its complex and interconnected sources. And as we deal with the cause of those events, we must stay united in purpose against that common threat. We undertook military action in Afghanistan because this was the base from which Al Qaida leaders were planning and directing major terrorist operations throughout the world. 10 Task 1 Transacting Business Candidates Brief You are currently serving as an exchange officer in Brazil. You have been contacted by the Commandant of the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, who is hosting an international conference in 10 months time on security issues facing NATO. The Commandant is keen to have representatives from a range of cultures and countries contributing to the discussion. S/he asks you to contact a leading academic at a local university to discuss what contributions s/he would be willing to make to the debate. The Commandant has listed the points s/he wants you to address: Explain that you are contacting him/her on the Commandant s behalf to find out if s/he would be interested in contributing to an international conference on the security issues facing NATO. We know that s/he has spent most of his/her professional career researching defence-related matters. Ask what s/he considers to be the main challenges facing NATO at present. Which of the topics would s/he be prepared to make a contribution to, either by delivering a paper or chairing a discussion group? Ask what the main arguments s/he would wish to include in any presentation are. Explain that we are hoping to stimulate an interesting debate and would hope to invite delegates who can complement and challenge the speakers. Find out what presentation media s/he would like to use. Ask for contact details of possible speakers on energy security. Explain that you will confirm discussions in writing and you will send details of the conference in due course. Please ask for a digital photograph of the speaker and a short biography for inclusion in the conference handbook. You start the conversation. You have 10 minutes to prepare before meeting the academic. On completion of the transaction you have 5 minutes to brief your Commandant (played by the Service Colleague) in English on the outcome.
