4 Welcome to the land of Santa Cruz The brothers of the Neocatechumenal Communities in Brazil are working with dedication to serve, as best as possible, the pilgrims from the Communities that are to come to Brazil, knowing that it is Christ who is visiting our land. Therefore, several cities in Brazil where the communities are present, have prepared themselves to welcome/host and help the pilgrims that will be evangelizing during their stay in Brazil for WYD. The cities and contacts to the hosts are at the end of this newsletter. 5 1. About Brazil 1.1. Language The official language is Portuguese. Therefore, you must rely on the help of translators for ads in the streets and squares, as well as getting in contact with bus companies, police, hospitals, etc... Foreseeing this difficulty, the communities in several cities in Brazil will have the assistance of MONITORS to assist pilgrims from other countries. However, you must send a request in advance via Call Center, to the responsible of the way for those cities where you will be passing through (the information of the Call Centers is the end of this newsletter). Attention! Even groups that do not request to be hosted in the homes of brothers of the communities in Brazil must contact the Call Centers in the cities where they will pass through. Groups needing Monitor "full time", during the full stay in Brazil. Should contact directly: monitor@rio2013cnc.com or (Marcos) Currency The local currency is called REAL (R$) and usually no other currencies is accepted (Dollar, Euro, etc..). We advise you to come with Reais from your home country, in view of the limitation of Exchange agencies in airports. In any case, those who plan to exchange money at the airports, we recommend joining all the money and make a single exchange to reduce the amount of taxes and fees. Remember that there is the possibility of repurchase, the day of departure. Usually credit/debit cards are accepted in stores of Brazil. We recommend coming with a credit card, avoiding transporting cash. Remember that debit cards are prepaid and is a quick and easy solution Weather The weather of Brazil is diversified as a result of various factors, due to extension of land area, geography, etc.. In July it is winter, but depending on the city there is a large difference of temperature and humidity. Usually the nights are cool. We recommend contacting the Call Center of each city through which you are passing for more details on the climatic conditions occurring in July. 6

7 2. Prior to the trip 2.1. Official enrollment for WYD Applications will be made only at the site of the Official WYD Rio2013 ( After registration of the responsible of the group, you must enroll a second responsible. The responsible for the group and the second responsible should be one male and one female. After proper registration, you will receive in your the user identification number and will be asked to generate a password. Remember that the password is personal and not transferable. Second you will have to enroll group members, make the choice for the package and make payment. Only after all these steps are completed, the group will effectively be enrolled in the WYD Rio2013. Each group should not exceed 50 people. If your group is larger, divide it into several groups of 50 maximum. In the enrollment procedures you will be asked the name of the group. To the pilgrims of the Neocatechumenal Way, please inform: "CNC-YYY", where "YYY" is the three-letter abbreviation of your country (exp: CNC-BRA, for groups of Brazil; CNC-ESP for groups of Spain, CNC-ITA, CNC-FRA, CNC-POL, CNC-USA, CNC-COL; CNC-PER; CNC-MEX, CNC-CHI, etc..). The groups who opt for accommodation provided by official organization (Local Organizing Committee - LOC) for WYD will be staying in family homes, schools, gyms, etc.. in the city of Rio de Janeiro and neighboring cities. More information about accommodations can be found on the official website. To request extension of hospitality, inform via hosped@rio2013.com (see Newsletter of January 2013) Registration process for Neocatechumenal Way Brazil To help in the communication, reception, and organization of handling, by the Communities of Brazil, the pilgrims who will come to WYD, an information system was created. To access the system a prior registration is required through the link: After completing and submitting the information in the link above, you will receive with guidelines regards to the access and use of system. If you do not receive your password, please contact the Call Center specially created to attend the pilgrims of the Way. 8

Contacts for all the host cities in Brazil are in the Annex "Responsibles Call Centers - WYD 2013" Hosting for Neocatechumenal Communities in Brazil To support the mission of evangelization of the pilgrims who will be visiting Brazil, the communities will be hosting for free the pilgrims in Brazilian cities where the way is present. The list of cities and contacts are in the Annex "Cities Available for Hosting of the Pilgrims of the Neocatechumenal Communities - WYD 2013". For housing, the responsible for each group of pilgrims must: 1. Register in the system of registration and hospitaly of the Neocatechumenal Center - Brazil, through the link: 2. Solicit via the system registration and housing, hospitality in some cities available for this purpose. 3. Confirm the information with the Call Center of the respective city. Attention! We ask all the responsibles of the groups to maintain contact with the Call Center of the cities where they will be passing through and inform their presence, even if they are not requiring hospitality of local communities Financial help for Vocational Meeting In order to facilitate the donations from the Pilgrim Groups for the coverage of costs of the Vocational Meeting on July 29 th with the Neocatechumenal Way s initiators, we have contracted a financial operator to guarantee safe and fast operations. Unfortunately, the service will incur the operational fee of 5% over the value to be transferred. In the system for hosting ( the payment will be charged on a credit card with automatic control. The minimum donation per person is US$ (fifteen U.S. dollars). The payment needs to be processed for the group as a whole in the system for hosting. 9

9 There will also be an option for voluntary donation, without any link to a pilgrim group on the website Important! The groups which are registered until june 30 th will receive a snack on Monday July 29 th in the place of the Vocational Meeting. Those groups that are not able to provide the donation via Credit Card, please contact economia@rio2013cnc.com. In case you have doubts, please contact us on economia@rio2013cnc.com. Verify all requirements that apply to your country for the leaving of minors Age to travel 2.6. Health Bring all medications (and prescriptions) required for all days of the pilgrimage. No vaccinations are required, but confirm if Brazil requires any vaccine from citizens of your country Medical Insurance We offer to the pilgrims traveling for the Way to the WYD Rio 2013 a Health Insurance to facilitate medical care. We entered into a contract with an insurance company specifically for the Pilgrims of the Neocatechumenal Way. Thus, we recommend that ALL pilgrims traveling to Rio for WYD to do the health insurance before traveling. The responsibility for sending the information to the insurance contract will be the responsibility of each group. The cost of insurance in Brazil's local currency (Reais) is R $ 2,65 per person per day. To contract the insurance, complete the worksheet in Excel (available and send it to the of GILMAR SILVA at: seguro.cnc@gmail.com. Each group must submit the following data for all components (incomplete information will not be accepted): - Full Name. - Age. - Period of travel - start and end date (date of travel ticket). - and telephone contact. - List of cities you will be visiting. 10 - Bank transfer Visa Citizens of European Union countries and the Mercosur do not require a visa to enter Brazil. In case of any doughts about the visa requirements for your country, see: Special Conditions for WYD Brazilian officials edited specific rules for issuing visas for pilgrims who attend the WYD For countries that require a visa to enter Brazil, the issue will be free for the pilgrims. After payment of registration on the official website of World Youth Day 2013 ( a letter of registration will be issued, which will have to be used along with a valid passport or equivalent travel document, for the visa application, will be done in its Brazilian diplomatic representative office. 11 2.9. Cell phone plans With the objective to facilitate the communication among the pilgrims who will come to Brazil, we have signed an agreement for special services from the telephone company Oi. For those who want to purchase a telephone chip for this service, we recommend to register in the system or contact the Call Center from the region you will be hosted or the National Call Center. Each chip will cost US$ 5.00 or 5.00 (five U.S. dollars or five Euros) to be paid when you arrive in Brazil. If you desire to do so, it is essential that you inform the system of registering and hosting the following information regarding your arrival in Brazil: airport, date and flight number. The subscription allows calls to any telephone in Brazil and abroad. There are low fees to call any cell phone from the company Oi, as well as any landline phone. For the first credit recharge, there are several options: Recharge of R$ 13,00 (thirteen reais): receive a daily bonus of R$ 26,00 (twenty six reais) during 30 days; Recharge of R$ 18,00 (eighteen reais): receive a daily bonus of R$ 36,00 (thirty six reais) during 30 days; Recharge of R$ 25,00 (twenty five reais): receive a daily bonus of R$ 50,00 (fifty reais) during 30 days; Recharge of R$ 35,00 (thirty five reais): receive a daily bonus of R$ 100,00 (one hundred reais) during 30 days. You may recharge the telephone in airports, restaurants, newsstand, convenience store or any authorized place showing the sign of the telephone company. After recharging the telephone, telephone calls to landline telephones in Brazil are free of charge. From now, we advise you to bring an unlocked to Brazil. Church of Our Lady of Candelaria Church in center of Rio de Janeiro, with neoclassical architecture and interior decorated with Italian style neorrenascentista. Monastery of St. Benedict Site: Founded in 1590 and located in the center of Rio de Janeiro. Convent of St. Anthony Site: Founded in 1620 and located in the center of Rio de Janeiro. 14 2.11. Support the Bishops There will be a team to support the Bishops (July 29) who will participate in the Vocational Meeting. To organize the reception and to facilitate communication between those responsible in Brazil and the responsible for groups of pilgrims who come to Brazil, we developed a system, which can be accessed through or Access to the system should be preceded by prior registration via the following link: Bus road transportation in Brazil For those traveling by bus through the streets of Brazil, inquire with the Travel Agency on the best times to travel, stop locations, safer routes, etc.. The locations stops must be scheduled in advance as places are limited and little capacity. Before you set up your road trip, inquire about the conditions and precautions that should be followed at the Call Center of the cities where you want to stop by. Attention! The charter buses will not be able to go around inside the perimeters of the city of Rio de Janeiro in the days of WYD (from day 7/23 until 7/29). Thus, the pilgrims will be dropped in local places that access to the public transportation system of the city of Rio de Janeiro and will make the rest of the route using the local public transportation. We recommend that you organize large groups of pilgrims in smaller groups (8-10 people) to facilitate the moving around of the city. 16

16 3.4. Safety Tips Keep original passport in a safe place and carry a copy. Never walk alone. Always have the phone numbers of your responsibles and Call Center of the Neocateumenal Way of Brazil. Avoid traveling by bus to long distances at night Eating The consumption of mineral water industrialized is the safest option. Do not drink tap water. 17

17 4. Days in Rio de Janeiro 4.1. Acess roads by bus The tour bus (charter) may not enter the city of Rio de Janeiro in the days of WYD (until the day of July 29). These buses will be allowed to leave the pilgrims in terminal trains/metro/bus and shall remain parked in parks of parking lots until the end of WYD. Attention! Groups that will not use the official hosting of COL and will be staying outside the city of Rio de Janeiro must verify to what extent the charter bus will be able to move too, so to better plan their day's of journey. The charter bus will be inspected on the borders of Brazil, as well as in state and the municipality of Rio de Janeiro Transportation in Rio de Janeiro In the pilgrim's backpack there will be cards (depending on the contracted Packet) for use of the system of public transportation in the days of WYD, that is until July 28th. Means of transport to be used Dedicated lines and regular bus Train and subway Boat The Official Organization informs that on the vigil with the Pope (July 27) the public transportion will leave pilgrims about 10 km from the place of the Vigil and the rest of the route is done on foot. The same will happen in return, on the 28th of July. Along the way, there will be rest areas and water. Attention! We do not recommend the use of transport vans, except the contracted tour companies The transport cards will not be valid for the day of the Meeting Vocational (7/29). On this day, whoever will be using public mass transportation system shall pay upon boarding. 18

18 4.3. Eating The pilgrims registered/inscribed in the Official Organization WYD will receive a personal card to acquire meals during the days of WYD. The amount of food contained in the package will depend on registration package of each group. The abbreviation "Cateq" indicates the days when meals will be distributed in places of Catechesis Touristic places to visit Given that the tour buses can not enter the city of Rio de Janeiro, visiting the sights of the city shall be done by taking the public transport system or by the contracting of local tour company Security There will be special plan of public safety for the days of WYD. However, we recommend: Do not visit favelas(slums), except locations previously scheduled. Inform yourself before, at the Call Center of Rio de Janeiro. Never walk alone, and warn the destination prior to those responsible in the group. Avoid stepping on the beaches, if you do not know how to swim (the current, in general, is strong). Avoid the use of private transportation vans. Leave your passport in a safe place and walk with a copy. The responsible of the group must have a copy of the passports of the pilgrims of his/her group to facilitate reissuing another of document, in case of loss or misplacement. Do not leave cameras, cell phones or other valuables unattended. Require each pilgrim to have the contact number of the person responsible of the Group. 19

Guaratiba Campus Fidei (West Zone) 7/27 Vigil with Holy Father Pope Francis. 7/28 Mas of the sending with Holy Father Pope Francis. Access to Guaratiba will be done through the Public Systems respective transport is planned and a walk of approximately 10 km/7mi (from the train stations/bus Campo Grande and Santa Cruz station and Notre Dame BRT). 20 5. Vocational Meeting with Initiators of Neocatechumenal Way 5.1. Address: Avenida Salvador Allende, Barra da Tijuca - Rio de Janeiro. Date: 29 de julho. Time: 2 p.m. The Place of the Vocational Meeting is indicated with the letter A Map 5.3. Directions Access to RIOCENTRO will be done through the use of the public transportation system of the city of Rio de Janeiro. Local authorities have promised to expand public transportation to destination RIOCENTRO on July 29, due to the Vocational Meeting. However, it is critical to have the information where groups of pilgrims of the Way will be staying for local authorities to target the expansion of public transportation. 21 Terminal Alvorada (Barra da Tijuca)- (708) Barra da Tijuca (706) Alternatively, you can take any bus that targets Terminal Alvorada (Barra da Tijuca) and then catch another bus bound for RIOCENTRO. Subway There is no direct subway to RIOCENTRO, so the last subway station for accessing RIOCENTRO is General Osório (Ipanema) and make the rest of the bus ride to Barra Shopping, where there will be available bus lines that provide access the RIOCENTRO. We are working with the COL and Local Authorities to create an exception to the buses for the Neocatechumenal Way that will come out to Rio, for Monday, the 29th. As soon as we have the correct information we will inform you. The exiting from the vocational encounter will occur in two ways: 5.4. Exiting Pilgrims that are not on chartered buses in Rio de Janeiro In this case, the return to the local residence will be done in the same way you used to reach the RIOCENTRO, that is using the public transportation system of the city. Pilgrims traveling immediately after the meeting on charter buses In this case, we negotiated with local authorities and with the RIOCENTRO so that the buses park in their own parking RIOCENTRO. Therefore, immediately after the vocational meeting you must embark on your bus. Attention! Being aware of the restrictions to accessing the city with charter buses to Rio de Janeiro, we need to be identified in advance all the buses with pilgrims of the Neocatechumenal Way will be allowed to park in RIOCENTRO. Therefore, it is essential to fill the information requested in the registration form for the pirlgrims of your group in the respective system, and hosting/housing of Neocatechumenal Brazil, which can be accessed through the website or ONLY THE BUSES PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED AND IDENTIFIED MAY PARK IN RIOCENTRO, groups who do not submit the form with the data of the bus will be parked at the locations indicated by COL and at the end of the Vocational Meeting, pilgrims of these groups should make use of the public transportion system of the city of Rio de Janeiro to get to the parking location of their charter bus. If they have difficulty using the system or for more information, contact the Call Center of your destination city, of Rio de Janeiro or Brasilia. 22
