PRAYER AND REFLECTION For the Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 28, 2015 Read: Mark 5:21-5:35 Human beings have not always been generous or just, and they didn t always believe in an afterlife. Israel slowly came to understand that God is not the source of death and injustice, but of life and justice. We hear in the Book of Wisdom that God made creatures to live. And in today s Gospel, we see this demonstrated concretely in Jesus, who heals the dead daughter of Jairus and the hemorrhaging woman. We who follow Jesus and have been led to this powerful understanding are called to live as people of generosity, justice and life. Aware of the many needs among ourselves, we pray for those close to us and for those whose names we will never know. For the church: that it may be a powerful advocate for life in all its aspects we pray, For adequate health care for all people and for those who seek new cures for disease and illness we pray, For those who exploit illness or deny care for economic gain we pray, For families who struggle to care for aging parents, chronically ill children or members with physical or mental disabilities we pray, For all who care for the sick and dying, and for the grace to be patient healers wherever we are we pray, For those among us who are sick, dying or in need of any kind; for those who have died we pray, Prayer Generous God, you have assured us that you are the source of life and justice, and you sent your Son to show us the depth of your generosity. Help us to be committed to life and justice for every human being. We pray in the name of your beloved Son, Jesus. Amen. Celebration 2015

Four men are in the hospital waiting room because their wives are having babies. A nurse goes up to the first guy and says, Congratulations! You re the father of twins. That s odd, answers the man. I work for the Minnesota Twins. A nurse says to the second guy, Congratulations! You re the father of triplets. That s weird, answers the second man. I work for the 3M Company. A nurse tells the third man, Congratulations! You re the father of quadruplets! That s strange, he answers. I work for the Four Seasons hotel. The last man is groaning and banging his head against the wall. What s wrong? the others ask. I work for 7 Up!

5 "Menina, - eu lhe digo - levante-se!" XIII Dom TC (Ano B): Sab 1, 13-15; 2, 23-24; Sl. 30 (29); 2 Cor 8, ; Marcos 5, No Evangelho de hoje duas histórias foram custuradas juntas (Mc 5, 21-43). São históiras de duas mulheres. A primeira sofria de hemorragia há doze anos. A segunda, uma menina de doze anos, está à beira da morte. Outra coisa comum às duas personagens é o fato de que elas não têm nome. A primeira mulher se mostra ativa e corajosa e toca no manto de Jesus. A outra é recepiente da ação de Jesus que, tocando-a, a levanta do sono da morte. Uma lança luz sobre o destino da outra. A ouvindo falar de Jesus e movida pela fé nele, foi no meio da multidão, aproximou-se de Jesus por trás e tocou na roupa dele. A hemorragia parou imediatamente. Agindo assim, ela mostra coragem e ousadia, pois quebra a barreira da exclusão e do isolamento. Seu gesto transgride lei que colocava limites entre o puro e o impuro. Quanto Jesus pede pela pessoa que o tocou, ela se apresenta a ele tremendo e consciente de seu ato transgressor conta a ele toda a verdade. No que Jesus responde, "Minha filha, sua fé curou você. Vá em paz e fique curada dessa doença." Na outra história, é Jesus mesmo que quebra a barreira da exclusão e divisão. A menina que aos dozes anos está entrando para vida adulta entra no campo da exclusão pelo simples fato de ser mulher. Num certo sentido, aos doze anos ela começa a morrer. Ao tocar no corpo da menina morta, Jesus transgride a lei que proibia qualquer pessoa de tocar no corpo de uma pessoa morta. O Evangelho afirma que Jesus "pegou a menina pela mão e disse: 'Talita cúmi', menina levantese!" Assim, o Evangelho de Marcos apresenta Jesus como superior a lei. Jesus é o Evangelho a Boa-Notícia de Deus que se revela a humanidade. Ele rompe as barreiras de divisão e restaura a vida humana. Oração Senhor Jesus Cristo, amigo das pessoas excluídas e marginalizadas, dai-nos a fé e a coragem da mulher que sofria de hemorragia e nos faz avançar sempre em direção à liberdade e à vida. Amém.
