2 EssentialArts The Casa das Mudas Arts Centre, Madeira s largest cultural venue and the third largest in Portugal, is located in Calheta, about 20 minutes from Funchal. Benefiting from this strategic location, the centre s aim is to offer a venue for the cosmopolitan world of art outside the cramped confines of the city, where lush mountainsides tumble down to the immensity of the ocean. The Casa s contemporary style architecture has performed well under the international spotlight, receiving just recognition, and critical acclaim. Situated within a vibrant landscape, the building designed by architect Paulo David has won awards such as A Pedra na Arquitectura, and was a finalist in the Mies van der Rohe European Contemporary Architecture Awards. Paulo David has made creative use of stone and glass, opting for large, minimalist spaces, and for white walls upon which hang works from several contemporary artists usually seen in museums and public spaces in major cities around the world. A sua arquitectura de estilo contemporâneo também tem sido alvo de admiração e reconhecimento por parte da comunidade internacional. 3 EssentialArts Surprises await you around every corner in the Casa das Mudas. Even before you enter the building, you ll be hard pushed to remain unaffected by the oversized bronze sculpture Male Torso from Colombian artist Fernando Botero. Inside, the Casa das Mudas boasts 12,000 square metres of floor space, much of which is divided into galleries for temporary and permanent exhibitions, a veritable maze of rooms well worth losing yourself in. No Centro das Artes, a surpresa é uma constante. À chegada, ainda no exterior, ninguém fica indiferente ao sobredimensionado "Male Torso", moldado em bronze, do colombiano Fernando Botero. No interior, com metros quadrados de área coberta, a Casa das Mudas está equipada com espaços para exposições temporárias e permanentes, autênticos labirintos por onde vale a pena se perder. Possui um auditório dotado da mais recente tecnologia que é destinado à realização de múltiplos eventos, nomeadamente peças de teatro, concertos e cinema, cuja capacidade atinge os 200 lugares. O Centro das Artes está dotado, ainda, com uma biblioteca, uma loja/livraria, uma cafetaria, um restaurante 39

The Arts Centre also contains a library, a shop/bookshop, a café, a restaurant, and a large cultural entertainment area with studios and art workshops. Opened in October 2004, the Centre was built from scratch as an extension of the old Casa das Mudas manor house, as part of a project totalling some 16 million euros under the auspices of the Sociedade de Desenvolvimento da Ponta Oeste. An investment easily justified in today s climate. In fact, the phenomenon of globalisation gives the centre the right to claim and why not that The World Begins Here. The creation of the Casa das Mudas Arts Centre is intrinsically linked to its mission: to bring national and international audiences into closer contact with the arts, and especially contemporary art, through the presentation of works of art of indisputable excellence. Ever since it opened its doors the Arts Centre has amassed a repertoire worthy of the envy of any major cultural capital. The Casa das Muda s inaugural exhibition, entitled Grande Escala, featured works by Picasso, Francis Bacon, Léger, Stella, Botero and Calder, taken from the Joe Berardo collection. The show Amaramália Abandono, featuring choreography from Vasco Wellencamp and performed by the Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo graced the stage of the Arts Centre from March 4th to 6th, Based on classic songs originally performed by fado legend Amália Rodrigues, including "Povo Que Lavas no Rio", "Barco Negro", "Gaivota" and "Prece, this successful production was well e uma ampla zona de animação cultural com ateliers e oficinas artísticas. O espaço, inaugurado em Outubro de 2004, foi construído de raíz, sendo uma extensão do antigo solar Casa das Mudas, uma obra da responsabilidade da Sociedade de Desenvolvimento da Ponta Oeste, que ascenceu aos 16 milhões de euros. Um investimento que se justifica nos tempos que correm. De facto, a globalização permite-nos afirmar e porque não? - que o Mundo Começa Aqui. Neste sentido, o nascimento do Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas está intrinsecamente ligado à sua missão: a de atrair o público nacional e internacional para as artes, especialmente para a arte contemporânea, através da apresentação de obras, cuja excelência é incontornável. Desde o momento em que abriu as suas portas, o Centro das Artes conseguiu um repertório capaz de fazer inveja às maiores capitais da cultura. June , saw the world première of two opera productions, Stravinsky s Mavra and William Walton s The Bear, brought to the Casa das Mudas Arts Centre by the Modern Art Centre of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. On July , the Arts Centre was chosen by renowned choreograph Clara Andermatt to première her latest creation Levanta os Braços como Antenas para o pertencente ao Comendador Joe Berardo - marcou a inauguração da Casa das Mudas, onde esteve patente até Janeiro de O espectáculo Amaramália - Abandono, assinado pelo coreográfo Vasco Wellencamp e interpretado pela Companhia Portuguesa de Bailado Contemporâneo, subiu ao palco do Centro das Artes entre 4 e 6 de Março de Recorde-se que esta produção, que tem por base fados interpretados por Amália Rodrigues, dos quais se destacam "Povo Que Lavas no Rio", "Barco Negro", "Gaivota" ou "Prece, foi muito aplaudida em todos os locais onde foi apresentada, inclusivé numa das mais emblemáticas salas de Nova Iorque, no Joyce Theatre. A 25 de Junho de 2005, em estreia absoluta, o Centro das Artes Casa das Mudas acolheu as óperas "Mavra" de Stravinsky e "O Urso" de William Walton, trazidas pelo Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. Foi no Centro das Artes, a 28 de Julho que a prestigiada coreógrafa Clara Andermatt estreou a sua nova criação Levanta os Braços como Antenas para o Céu, com o grupo Dançando com a Diferença. 44

Open Tuesday to Sunday between 10.00h and 19.00h, here you can uncover the essence of Arte Povera from the Berardo Collection, on show until the end of December, and featuring works from artists such as Jannis Kounellis, Pistoletto, Giuseppe Penone, Paolini, amongst others. 10 EssentialArts Scheduled between September 2005 and March 2006, the Casa das Mudas presents a season of film series featuring works from some of the world s finest filmmakers. The programme includes sessions dedicated to Stanley Kubrik, Tim Burton and others entitled Christmas in Films, David W. Griffitth and the Birth of Cinema and The Pink Panther. Each film series is accompanied by a specially published book, available in the Arts Centre s bookshop. Quality shows, events, and exhibitions will continue to figure in annual programmes offered by the Casa das Mudas, whose ambition to be a recognised member of the international arts circuit is close to becoming a reality. e ao culminar do espectáculo em palco, poderá ser visto até 31 de Dezembro de O notável trabalho do fotógráfo paisagístico Thomas Joshua Cooper, intitulado "End of The World", um trabalho executado entre 1994 e 2003, tendo como pano de fundo Portugal e Espanha, está patente até 26 de Fevereiro de Os ciclos de cinema, que começaram em Setembro deste ano, decorrem até Março de Tratam-se de obras cinematográficas assinadas pelos melhores cineastas. Daí a realização do ciclo de cinema Stanley Kubrick, o ciclo dedicado a Tim Burton e ainda os ciclos O Natal no Cinema, David W. Griffith e o Nascimento do Cinema e A Pantera Cor-de-Rosa. De salientar que por cada ciclo de cinema foi publicado um livro que se encontra à venda na livraria do Centro das Artes. Os espectáculos, eventos e exposições de elevada qualidade vão continuar a fazer parte dos programas anuais da Casa das Mudas, cuja ambição de ser parte integrante do circuito internacional das artes começa a tornar-se uma realidade.
