5 Prefácio Pele da Cidade é um conceito abstracto assim como uma realidade concreta. O processo de urbanização moderna e a profusão de imagens que lhe está associada, já se tornaram tanto uma característica que a define como uma inevitável tendência nas cidades modernas. Esta exposição utiliza o discurso da arte contemporânea e os métodos dos estudos de viabilidade para explorar o conceito e a redefinição da cidade moderna e para investigar o papel desempenhado pelo conceito de imagem no funcionamento da cidade. A exposição intitulada Pele da Cidade Imagens da Metrópole Contemporânea é co-organizada pela Galeria Tap Seac de Macau e pelo Museu de Arte de Shenzhen, e tem como tema a pesquisa experimental na arte contemporânea. O convite para apresentação de obras recebeu uma resposta entusiasta pela parte de artistas da China Continental assim como de Macau, e a exposição realizar-se-á em Macau e em Shenzhen, um facto que certamente terá um impacto positivo no diálogo crescente sobre arte contemporânea e cultura entre Macau e o continente chinês. Nas obras em exibição, artistas da China Continental e de Macau expressam diferentes experiências, interpretações e explorações da cidade e das suas imagens. Estes diferentes sentimentos e investigações revelam, sucessivamente, até que ponto os problemas e condicionantes da vida contemporânea se revelam uma preocupação entre os artistas de hoje. Demonstram igualmente a profundidade da sua análise e pensamento sobre a imagem e a situação urbana contemporânea. 5 Ao expor estas peças, tentámos expandir o sentido tradicional da sala de exposições para incluir outros locais públicos da cidade, tais como edifícios históricos, ruas, becos, passagens escondidas e sítios classificados de Património Mundial. Tentámos também montar a exposição através do uso de tecnologias tais como écrans electrónicos, painéis publicitários, instalações e meios de comunicação tradicionais e modernos (jornais, televisão, telefones móveis). Ao mesmo tempo, à medida que a Internet se está rapidamente a tornar no novo agente de funcionamento da cidade, surge também nesta exposição como uma estratégia para exibir obras de artistas. Esperamos que esta exposição e a pesquisa que a mesma envolveu possam motivar os espectadores a lançarem um novo olhar sobre o seu próprio ambiente quotidiano e que possam inspirar-se nela também. 6 Foreword City Skin is an abstract concept as well as a concrete reality. The process of modern urbanization and its associated flood of images have already become both a defining feature and an inevitable trend in modern cities. This exhibition uses the discourse of contemporary art and the methods of feasibility studies to explore the concept, and redefinition, of the modern city, and to investigate the role played by the concept of the image in the functioning of the city. 6 The exhibition entitled City Skin Images of the Contemporary Metropolis is co-organized by the Macao Tap Seac Gallery and the Shenzhen Museum of Art, and takes as its topic experimental research in contemporary art. The call for works received an enthusiastic response among artists from mainland China as well as Macao, and the exhibition itself will take place in both Macao and Shenzhen, a fact that will certainly have a positive impact upon the increasing dialogue about contemporary art and culture between Macao and the mainland. In the pieces on display, artists from mainland China and Macao express different experiences, interpretations, and explorations of the city and its images. These different sentiments and investigations in turn reveal the extent to which the problems and conditions of contemporary life are of widespread concern among todayʼs artists. It also demonstrates the depth of their analysis and thinking about images and the contemporary urban situation. In exhibiting these pieces, we have tried to expand the traditional sense of the exhibition hall to include other public spaces in the city, such as historical buildings, streets, back alleys and hidden passageways, and World Heritage sites. We have also tried to mount the exhibition through the use of technologies such as electronic screens, billboards, outdoor installations, and traditional and modern media (newspapers, television, cell phones). At the same time, as the Internet is quickly becoming a new medium for the functioning of the city, it also appears in this exhibition as a strategy for displaying artistsʼ works. We hope that this exhibition and the research that has gone into it may motivate viewers to take a new look at their own everyday environment, and to take new inspiration from it as well. 9 Uma palavra dos comissários Pela da Cidade Imagens da Metrópole Contemporânea Wu Hong, Lu Hong O tema da Exposição, Pele da Cidade, sugere dois significados: Em primeiro lugar, o que chamamos imagens urbanas excederam em muito a sua função original de instrumentos para registo ou de artefactos materiais para serem apreciados. Os processos de criação de imagens e os resultados da captação de imagens são cada vez mais parte do próprio funcionamento da cidade, construções da própria paisagem urbana. Actualmente, a cidade superou em muito a sua função tradicional de centro comercial e administrativo; cada vez mais, a metrópole moderna está associada ao seu papel como centro para os media, um eixo do fluxo de informações e centro de transmissão. Neste processo, as imagens e um grande número de formas a elas associadas, desempenharam um papel fundamental. Por exemplo, os anúncios comerciais e cartazes, dominantes nos centros das cidades, e que proclamam as ideologias dominantes desempenham a mesma função que desempenhavam as pinturas murais nas igrejas e templos do período em que dominava a ideologia religiosa: a de serem sentinelas dessa ideologia para o povo. Comparando os primeiros com as últimas, não só o conteúdo e a forma são diferentes mas, o mais importante, onde os primeiros diferem das últimas é na diferença entre espaço interno e fechado versus dimensão pública e ʼexternalidadeʼ. Por um lado, estas superfícies arquitectónicas constituem o fundo visual do ambiente público de uma cidade moderna; e um sinal dos tempos da vida social urbana contemporânea por outro lado, enquanto funcionam como instrumento de troca e transmissão de informações, elas medeiam o que Jurgen Habermas chamou de socialidade. Enquanto portadores de informação de que são exemplo os enormes écrans electrónicos, os écrans multimédia, instalados no exterior da maioria dos edifícios públicos, os anúncios rotativos, bandeiras e faixas pendurados nos postes de iluminação ao longo de várias ruas em sucessão estas imagens constituem em si próprias elementos arquitectónicos; ou o que Stephen Parella reconheceu como uma arquitectura de hipersuperfície : locais onde, na sociedade da informação, as realidades material e virtual interagem na vida quotidiana. Em segundo lugar, a cultura e a vida urbanas ocupam-se cada vez mais dos sentidos, imagens e superficíes. Este processo não só transformou radicalmente a nossa percepção do mundo exterior, mas veio a redifinir a dicotomia ontológica tradicional entre sujeito e objecto. Tal como o filósofo Maurice Mearleau-Ponty escreveu um dia o nosso corpo não está no mundo como as coisas; ele habita ou persegue o espaço. Ele aplica-se ao espaço como uma mão a um instrumento. 1 Como encarnação do mundo é, simultaneamente, uma exteriorização do corpo-sujeito, pelo qual a consciência está em contacto directo com o mundo, e a interiorização do mundo, pela qual o mundo se torna perceptível à consciência. Por outras palavras, o corposujeito e o mundo estão abertos um ao outro; entre eles não existe a dicotomia entre sujeito e objecto, dentro e fora, espírito e matéria. 2 9 De modo similar, a encarnação da cultura urbana pode também ser apreendida visualmente. A encarnação sugere a natureza orgânica da cidade; a vitalidade, multiplicidades, movimentos e doenças da cidade podem ser expressos através do conceito de organismo urbano, e as imagens visuais da cidade podem ser entendidas como o acesso mais directo a este organismo. Assim, enquanto espectadores da cultura da imagem da cidade moderna, opomo-nos ao ponto de vista formalístico e hostil que é adoptado pelos pseudo-intelectuais relativamente à cultura urbana o culto, cuidadosamente cultivado, de um sentimento de superioridade e de uma atitude crítica perante as formas culturais da cidade. Pelo contrário! Nós sugerimos uma aproximação que compreenda a cidade como uma extensão dos sentidos do nosso corpo e as várias características e atributos da cidade como inseparáveis de nós próprios. A pessoa não é exterior às pessoas, os soberanos da cultura urbana; e, enquanto um indivíduo é uma parte do organismo da cultura urbana, ele/a participa no processo da cultura citadina e representa o seu resultado. Por outras palavras, nós somos um resultado, examinando o processo e reflectindo sobre o resultado. A cidade, na nossa forma de ver, não existe isoladamente; nem sequer a podemos renegar como a fonte maligna dos desejos materiais ou a arena das monstrosidades tecnológicas que não têm qualquer relação connosco. Sem dúvida, sendo eu um organismo que participa no funcionamento da cidade, qualquer conhecimento que eu tenha é moldado pela cultura urbana contemporânea. Ao mesmo tempo, a função e atributos da cidade e até os seus modos de representação transformam-se também de acordo com as diferentes necessidades que eu lhe apresento. O significado disto é que se nos colocarmos na posição dos pseudo-intelectuais, de cada vez que desfrutarmos dos prazeres materiais proporcionados pelas comodidades tecnológicas da cidade moderna, temos também que nos vestir com o fato de vítimas, ou de nos imaginamos tão puros quanto anjos enquanto habilmente usamos processadores para dactilografar os nossos manifestos contra os males do desejo materialista no mundo moderno. Porque não parar e reflectir nas nossas posições enquanto membros da classe média? Porque não parar de questionar, se a quantidade de capital social que reclamamos é de facto tão grande quanto o do normal habitante da cidade - os empregados bancários, o taxista ou o empregado despedido? Logo que fizermos isto, devemos passar a ver-nos como parte da cidade e reconhecer o nosso potencial para realizar os nossos desejos ; deixamos de poder adoptar apenas uma atitude crítica que nos permita uma distância segura e higiénica relativamente à trama de conexões de desejos associados à cidade. 10 Neste novo sentido, portanto, queremos usar a nossa consciência encarnada para experimentar a cidade, em lugar de utilizar uma perspectiva conceptual para criticar a materialidade da cidade. A pele da cidade e a minha carne/o meu corpo são um só; tal como a minha carne/corpo, a pele da cidade é capaz de experimentar o calor, a humidade, o toque e a dor. 10 Nos parágrafos anteriores expusémos rudemente o que queremos dizer quando dizemos que as imagens urbanas são a pele da cidade. Considerando esta nossa posição, quando se chega à pesquisa das múltiplas e variadas possibilidades deste entendimento das imagens urbanas, não gostaríamos de conceber uma exposição de fotografia como a simples decoração de uma parede branca com algumas fotos ampliadas. As inovações nas estratégias de apresentação destes trabalhos, bem como no modo em que são exibidos, permitir-nosão melhor experimentar as múltiplas formas em que as nossas vidas quotidianas estão relacionadas com as imagens urbanas que formam a pele da cidade, bem como as múltiplas possibilidades de experiência visual conseguidas pela rápida mudança da vida urbana que nos é apresentada através de imagens. Ao mesmo tempo, uma nova forma de exposição pode ser um caminho que permita às peças apresentadas tornarem o mundo presente à nossa consciência, unindo a nossa consciência com a do público e do habitante normal da cidade. Sendo uma outra forma de apresentação (artística), pode mesmo permitir restaurar a nossa participação na construção da imagem de cidade, criando um novo organismo na vida citadina através da fusão da pele da cidade com aquela que cobre a nossa própria carne. Por estas razões, o nosso espaço de exposição expande-se para além da noção tradicional de sala de exposições integrando as muitas áreas e superfícies da cidade que integram a sua pele : os écrans electrónicos gigantes, letreiros de rua, postes de iluminação, superfícies das ruas, céus e os órgãos tradicionais de comunicação social (os jornais, a televisão, etc). No que se refere ao conceito de carne, tal como as paredes interiores formadas pelas membranas que cobrem as cavidades do nosso corpo, as nossas obras podem estender-se às casas dos artistas ou dos cidadãos comuns. Neste sentido, o conceito tradicional de sala de exposições pode também ser compreendido como uma parede de uma cavidade corporal. Simultaneamente, tendo-se a Internet tornado a nova forma de apreender a cidade, ela será também considerada nas estratégias de apresentação desta exposição.

11 City Skin Imag of the Contemporary M ropolis Wu Hong, Lu Hong The theme of this exhibition, City Skin has two meanings. First, what we call urban images has already far exceeded their original function as tools for recording or as a material artifact to be appreciated. The processes of image-making and the results of image-taking are increasingly a part of the very functioning of the city itself, and the construction of the urban landscape. In modern times, the city has far surpassed its traditional function as an administrative and marketing center; rather, the function of the modern metropolis is increasingly bound to its role as a center for media, a hub of informational flows. In this process, images and a number of associated forms have played a decisive role. For example, in the central districts of many modern cities, commercial advertisements and billboards proclaiming mainstream ideologies play the same role that murals in churches and temples once played in the era of the ascendancy of religious ideology: that of broadcasting the tenets of that ideology to the people. Comparing the former with the latter, however, we find that not only do they differ in content and form; more importantly, where the former diverges from the latter is in the difference between enclosed and internal spaces vs. publicnessʼ and externality. On the one hand, these architectural surfaces constitute the visual background of the modern cityʼs public environment, and a sign of the times of contemporary urban social life; on the other hand, insofar as they function in the transmission and exchange of information, they mediate what Jürgen Habermas has referred to as sociality. As carriers of information for example, large LED screens and giant multimedia displays on the outside walls of major public buildings, rolling billboards, or flags attached to lampposts for several blocks in a row these images in themselves constitute architectural elements, or what Stephen Perella has called hypersurface architecture: sites where, in the information society, virtual and material realities interface in daily life. Second, urban culture and urban life are becoming increasingly about senses, images, and surfaces. This process has not only profoundly altered the way we apprehend the external world, but has even redefined the traditional ontological dichotomy between subject and object. As the philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty once wrote, our body is not in space like things; it inhabits or haunts space. It applies itself to space like a hand to an instrument. 1 As an incarnation of the world, is both the externalization of the body-subject, through which consciousness makes direct contact with the world, and the internalization of the world, through which the world is made perceptible to consciousness. In other words, the bodysubject and world are open to each other; there is no dichotomy between subject and object, inside and outside, mind and matter Similarly, the incarnation of urban culture can be apprehended visually. The term incarnation suggests the organic nature of the city; the vitality, multiplicities, movements, and illnesses of the city can be expressed through the concept of the urban organism, and the visual images of the city can be thought of as the most direct access to this organism. As spectators of the image culture of the modern city, then, we oppose the formalistic, hostile posturing that the false intellectual often adopts towards urban culture the careful cultivation of a sense of superiority and a critical attitude toward the cityʼs cultural forms. Quite the opposite: we suggest an approach that understands the city as an extension of the bodyʼs senses, and the various characteristics and attributes of the city as inseparable from ourselves. The person is not external to the people, the rulers of urban culture; and insofar as an individual is a part of the organism of urban culture, s/he both participates in the process of urban culture, and represents its result. In other words, we are a result, examining the process, and reflecting upon the result. The city, in our field of vision, does not exist in isolation; nor can we dismiss it as an evil fountainhead of material desires or an arena of technological monstrosities that has no connection to ourselves. Rather, since I am an organism that is part of the functioning of the city, any knowledge I have is shaped by contemporary urban culture. At the same time, the cityʼs functions, its attributes, even its modes of representation, also change with the changing demands I place on it. This means that if we place ourselves in the position of the false intellectual, every time we avail ourselves of the material pleasures or technological conveniences of the modern city, we must also dress ourselves up in the costume of the victim, or imagine ourselves to be as pure as angels while expertly word-processing manifestoes against the evils of material desire in the modern world. Why not stop and reflect on our own position, as members of a social middle class? Why not stop to question whether or not the amount of social capital that we lay claim to is really so much greater than that of the average city dweller the bank teller, the taxi driver, the laid-off worker? Once we do so, we must see ourselves as part of the city and recognize our own potential to realize our desires; we can no longer use only a critical position to distance ourselves so cleanly from the interwoven networks of desires associated with the city. In this sense, then, we want to use our incarnate consciousness to experience the city, rather than simply using a Notes: 1. 12 conceptual approach to critique the materiality of the city. The skin of the city and my flesh are one; just like my flesh, the skin of the city can experience heat, wet, touch, and pain. 12 In the foregoing paragraphs, we have roughly sketched out what we mean when we say that urban images are the city skin Given this approach, when it comes to researching the many and varied possibilities of this understanding of urban images, we did not wish to design a photography exhibit by simply sparsely populating a blank white wall with a few enlarged photographs. The innovations in the representational strategies of these works, as well as in the manner in which they are exhibited, may better enable us to experience the many ways in which our daily lives are connected to the urban images that form the city skin, and the multiple possibilities for visual experience afforded to us by the rapidly changing urban life that is represented to us through images. At the same time, a different mode of exhibition may be one way of enabling the pieces on display to make the world perceptible to our consciousness, uniting our consciousness with that of the audience and the average urban dweller. As an other (artistic) representational mode, it may even restore our participation in the construction of the urban image creating a new organism in the life of the city by uniting the city skin with that which covers our own flesh. For these reasons, our exhibition space expands the traditional notion of the exhibition hall to include the many areas and surfaces of the city that comprise its skin : electronic billboards, street signs, light boxes, street surfaces, skies, and traditional forms of media (such as newspapers and television). As for the concept of flesh, like the inner walls formed by the membranes that cover the cavities of our bodies, our works sometimes extend all the way into the homes of the artists and average citizens. In this sense, the traditional notion of the exhibition hall could also be understood as a body cavity wall. At the same time, insofar as the Internet has become a new mode of apprehending the city, it will also form part of the representational strategies of this exhibition.

A conveniência da fotografia do telefone portátil significa que posso registar as coisas à vontade, enquanto a cor e a qualidade das fotografias conferem às próprias imagens uma espécie de efeito esbatido e impreciso. Esta actividade tornou-se verdadeiramente parte da vida. As fotografias parecem apresentar uma corrente de fragmentos da vida quotidiana, variando os graus de repetição entre estes fragmentos, assim como a sua intermutabilidade escondida. Podem ser vistos como um dia na vida, um qualquer dia. De vez em quando, os meus amigos enviam-me mensagens a cores para o meu telemóvel. Posso guardálas na memória do telefone para quase qualquer dia. A natureza interactiva desta peça reside na normalidade e intermutabilidade da vida quotidiana de todas as pessoas. Home, subway, street; the trivial, the commonplace, repetition. Piled-up skirt hems, thighs, pants legs; exhaled breaths meeting countless smells in the surrounding air, countless faces filtering fatigue; my head quickly inflates, and the camera lens swells too. Dizzy! These ever-changing individual persons and objects have no meaning, only colour. The convenience of cell phone photography means that I can record things at will, while the color and quality of the photos give the pictures themselves a kind of blurred and shimmering effect. This activity has truly become a part of life. The photos seem to present a stream of fragments of everyday life, varying degrees of repetition among these fragments, as well as their concealed interchangeability. They may be regarded as a day in the life, any day. Now and then, my friends send me colour messages on my cell phone. I can save them in the phoneʼs memory for almost any day. The interactive nature of this piece relies upon the normalcy and interchangeability of everyoneʼs daily life. 14

Concept This mural depicting the enlightened Buddhist layman Vimalakirti (Wei Mojie) is based on the story about the mural by Wu Daozi (or Li Gonglin), in which the artist, after having drawn all of the details of the figure, had left a space to paint two dots for his eyes. He waited until the opening ceremony of a new temple; then, in front of the assembled audience, he painted in the eyes, which immediately brought the whole painting to life, astonishing the crowd. This is an example of the process by which an everyday occurrence unexpectedly become a mystery; in this sense, it is similar to the way in which the television screen becomes the two eyes through which we observe and understand the world. In the ancient mural, Vimalakirtiʼs spirit was projected in all directions as far as the eye could see; yet today, the television, with its dazzle, camouflages our eyes, making the path towards individual enlightenment ever more obscure. The remote control in the hands of the viewer can alter the televisual images in the eyes of Vimalakirti; but no one can control the world in his eyes.

Não estou de todo certo o que são imagens urbanas; talvez todas as imagens produzidas nas cidades sejam imagens urbanas. O que me interessa são aquelas cenas que estão directamente relacionadas comigo. 2. Rasgar uma fotografia em pedaços é fácil. Voltar a juntar os pedaços é um pouco mais difícil. 1. I am not at all sure what urban images are; perhaps all images produced in cities are urban images. What interests me are those scenes that have a direct relationship with my self. 2. Ripping a photograph to shreds is easy. Sticking it back together is a bit more troublesome.
