3 Editorial Report Between 1994 and 2002, the scientific research at the University of Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro was organized as a single Unit (ICETA), including all Ph.D. staff from all the different scientific areas. Afterwards, it evolved into nine research Units, six of them emerging from ICETA and, between 2003 and 2006, it was evident that some of the previous Units need to be merged and that new ones should be created. The CIDESD (Research Center for Sport, Health and Human Development) emerged naturally from this policy strategy defined in UTAD. The final objective of this policy was to create Units of scientific excellence with the minimum international panel classification level of very good. Thus, we have set a few focused driving forces for this process in the following years: attract international level researchers from other institutions, networking with national institutions, internationalization through the definition of anchor institutions for each of the major projects of each Unit, increase the links to the society and stakeholders, improve the scientific dynamics (productivity, organization of conferences and seminars, etc.) and finally, but not the least, to enhance the image and marketing of our science. Locally, nationally and internationally, the CIDESD embraced this challenge and is gradually meeting the defined policy. The network is created and comprises eight consorted higher education institutions (Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Escola Superior de Desporto de Rio Maior, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, Instituto Politécnico de Viseu, Instituto Superior da Maia, Universidade da Beira Interior and Universidade da Madeira), with critical mass and multidisciplinary expertise for being competitive and able to develop high quality science. This is the activity report of the last four years ( ) that describes the origin, development and current productivity. This Unit is gathered under a new pathway for science by congregating research in Sports Performance, Health and Pedagogical and Professional Intervention. The international links are created and developed and the interactions with the society are also evident. The youth of the team and the project, which has the curiosity of aggregating primarily non-littoral institutions, is building a promising future for research in our country. I am confident that the future will continue to show the relevance and contribution of this project for the progress of science under these scopes. 10 MISSION AND GOALS The goals of CIDESD are stated in three major domains: 1) Research groups: Sports Performance - Health - Professional and Pedagogical Intervention. 2) Community Intervention: Providing services to community and developing effective intervention strategies.

12 BRIEF HISTORY Organizational Structure On May 30, 2007, a cooperation protocol was signed between the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro, Universidade da Beira Interior, Universidade da Madeira, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, Instituto Politécnico de Viseu, Escola Superior de Desporto de Rio Maior, Escola Superior de Enfermagem de Vila Real and Instituto Superior da Maia, for the creation of the RESEARCH CENTER IN SPORTS AND HEALTH AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT (CIDESD) The CIDESD is a supra-institutional, technical, scientific unit of applied and undamental research of a multidisciplinary nature whose main host is the Universidade de Trás - os - - Montes e Alto Douro. The CIDESD was accredited and rated as Good by the Science and Technology Foundation from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education after visit in 08/04/2008.

13 Organizational Structure: CIDESD SYMBOL The graphic image and symbol of CIDESD was a clean solution to which a color was added, violet, for being a sophisticated, extravagant and "dignified" color. In ancient Rome, Caesar and his generals used violet when they returned triumphant from the war. It is also used by royalty. This color is linked to great deeds and is still used by the U.S. military, with the Purple Heart medal and the mention of sacrifice and achievement.at the bottom and in a simpler way represents the known maxims such as "unity is strength or "together we will succeed". It stems from the need to represent growth and development, search and research. It is not more than these concepts applied to an aesthetic form.

15 Organizational Structure MESSAGE FROM CONSORTED INSTITUTIONS DIRECTOR S UTAD Carlos Alberto Sequeira UTAD's mission is to teach, to develop and to expand. UTAD is organized into five schools: Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences; Humanities and Social Sciences; Science and Technology; Life and Environment Sciences and Nursing School. The permanent team includes 530 teachers (393 PhDs) and 522 technical and administrative subjects giving support to about 8000 students. UTAD offers 37 undergraduate (first cycle), about 77 Masters (second cycle) and Doctorate degrees. Research activities are concentrated in eight Research Centers: Centre for Veterinary Science and Zoology, Centre for Research and Technology of agro-environmental and biological Sciences, Center of Transdisciplinary Studies for Development, Center for Genetics and Biotechnology (part of a laboratory associated with the Institute of Biotechnology and Bioengineering), Centre for Studies in Literature, Chemistry Research Center, Center for Mathematics and the Research Center in Sports, Health Sciences and Human Development. Research Units doubled the production of scientific theses of SCI over the past three years. These Research Units integrate researchers from other Portuguese and foreign institutions. A gradual increase in connections on stakeholders and Small and Medium companies has been achieved, as well as an increase in the number of curricular training programs. UTAD has a wide portfolio of projects (supported by national and international grants) with high activity and relevance in all areas, but more action is required of FP7 although several proposals have been submitted.

16 Organizational Structure MESSAGE FROM CONSORTED INSTITUTIONS DIRECTOR S UBI João António de Sampaio Rodrigues Queiroz Teaching and research are the major pillars for the functioning of an University and its standards of excellence represent always, its main reference regarding prestige. Building a strategy for change and reinforcing the growing presence of UBI is based in the ability to create and take the excellence of the teaching-research nexus as organizational culture and as a practical approach to action. On the pursuit of this strategy, UBI receives a range of national and multi-institutional units and research centers of high quality. The research units UBI CIDESD is in this range of high level national and multi-institutional research centers. The CI- DESD-UBI has been affirmed as a unit which has revealed itself extremely dynamic in the area of sport science.

17 Organizational Structure MESSAGE FROM CONSORTED INSTITUTIONS DIRECTOR S UMA José Manuel Castanheira da Costa The University of Madeira (UMa) was established by Decree-Law 319-A/88, from September 13 th, having, it s first Statutes, been approved at May 13 th, It is currently governed by the Statutes approved on October 9 th of 2008, resulting from the review based on the Law 62/2007 of 10 of September, that is the new Legal Regime of Higher Education Institutions (RJIES). Uma s organization emanates from the General Council that sets the strategic policy in order to exploit the strong points and capabilities of the institution, in the use of resources, preferred partnerships and effective assessment of performance and results. In order to combine excellence in education with research and innovation is defined as a structure that is organized around a matrix of vertical Competence Centres / disciplinary (research-driven), and Colleges and Horizontal Institutes of Innovation (focusing on education and innovation) and the corresponding strategic areas that represent technological challenges foreground in a prospective long-term, likely to generate innovative solutions with significant impact on competitiveness.

18 Organizational Structure MESSAGE FROM CONSORTED INSTITUTIONS DIRECTOR S IPB João Alberto Sobrinho Teixeira The Polytechnic Institute of Bragança (IPB) has been distinguished since its creation, mainly due to its mainly due to a continued concern in the qualification of its teaching staff and its research capacity. Its integration in CIDESD (Research Center in Sports, Health Sciences and Human Development.) is part of a wide strategy, providing opportunities for researchers from these scientific domains to enhance their research outcomes, and to the IPB regarding its mission in its geographical area of intervention.

19 Organizational Structure MESSAGE FROM CONSORTED INSTITUTIONS DIRECTOR S ISMAI Domingos Oliveira Silva The connection between higher education and research within the framework of European universities, competing in the contest for hegemony in the knowledge society without frontiers, has, nowadays, high expression in Portugal, in several scientific areas, reflecting in economic competition, particularly in the sport context. Recent sports results, with resounding success obtained by the Portuguese athletes, representing individual and collective sports, increase the responsibility of acting in the teaching - learning process, and especially for those who reveal themselves available to go further searching for knowledge which is progressively transformed into the highest good possible, contemplating life, prosperous and happy, desirable for all human beings. The activity of CIDESD, despite the high standards requirements, will continue to be a valuable contribution to the upraising dignity of Portuguese sport with a high economic sense and social impact.

20 Organizational Structure MESSAGE FROM CONSORTED INSTITUTIONS DIRECTOR S ESDRM Rita Santos Rocha The Sport Sciences School of Rio Maior (ESDRM) is a public Portuguese higher education school integrated in the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém. ESDRM was established in 1997 and has approximately 100 staff members and 800 students. This new institution is devoted to Sports Sciences, training and research. The school provides 5 graduations (1st cycle), 3 masters degrees (2nd cycle) and several post-graduate/short term programs on the following subjects: Sports Coaching, Fitness and Health, Outdoor Sports, Nature Tourism, Sports Psychology, Sports Management, Sports, and Physical Activity and Special Populations. The school has a Sports Research Centre and is integrated in the consortium that created CIDESD. The full time teachers are involved in several research & development projects and doctorate programs which are developed within CIDESD and other national research centres, and national and international universities. ESDRM provides support services related to physical activity and sports through its Sports Research Centre and also develops interactive programs with the community (active ageing, active pregnancy and active school). 23 RESEARCH TOPICS SPORTS PERFORMANCE 1) Performance Analysis Focus on the objective ways of recording performance so that key elements can be quantified in a valid and reliable manner. 2) Genetic, Physiological and Biomechanical Analysis Related to the analysis and computation of genetic, physiological and biomechanical models able to describe and predict the human movement and their relationship to performance.

24 Research Topics HEALTH 1) Physical Activity and Mental Health This topic is focused on the study of the impact of physical activity and exercise on mental health. 2) Health Promotion in the Life Cicle Related to the research of the health organizations management and systems of information, health policies and the satisfaction of the staff and users of health services. Also, a major aim for this topic is to study of the evaluation and promotion of public health habits in young population, health promotion in work spaces, the quality of life in elderly and health care. 3) Physical Activity, Physical Fitness and Health This topic is focused on the impact of physical activity in their biological, psychological and social dimensions on the children, adolescents, adults and elderly.
