PRAYER AND REFLECTION For the Fifth Sunday of Easter May 3, 2015 Read: John 15: 1-8 Today we continue to hear of the early Christian communities, as they multiplied and grew. Spreading the Gospel was a risky thing, and they were motivated and fed by their memories of Jesus powerful words. The familiar Israelite image of the vine in today s Gospel would have been especially reassuring: Despite the physical separation, their deep, ongoing, connection to Jesus remained firm. It s the same message for us. Stay close, trust in the source, and keep bearing fruit! Brothers and sisters, we who are branches on the vine of Christ, raise our voices in prayer for our beloved families, friends, and neighbors, and for all people across this planet. For the church and for all Christians, that we may remember that we are all branches of the true vine we pray, For those who have no connections, who struggle to make it on their own, especially refugees, children, youth, and all who feel alienated or alone we pray, For peace within and among all nations, especially in those places where alienation creates violence and extremism we pray, For individuals, groups, and organizations that provide life-giving resources to those in need we pray, For those who fear stepping out and acting on their convictions to create a better world we pray, For those families experiencing broken relationships; and for all families we pray, For all the needy and sick among us, especially those who are alone; and for those who have died we pray, PRAYER Gracious God, you are the vine grower who has given us your Son, to bind us to him and to one another. Help us to remember that we are not alone, and empower us to bear good fruit. We ask these things in the name of Jesus, the true vine. Amen. Celebration 2015

The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive is on Saturday May 9 th. What you need to do is put your non-perishable food donations in a bag by your mail box and your mail carrier will pick it up. All food collected in Lowell will be donated to: Catholic Charities Food Pantry, Central Food Ministries, Lowell Transitional Living Center, MVFB Mobile Pantry Program and Open Pantry of Greater Lowell. São João, porém, usa-a com outro significado: a vinha é Jesus e o novo povo de Deus, os ramos. O centro da passagem evangélica é a relação videira/ramos. A vitalidade dos ramos origina-se de sua união com a videira e se traduz em dar frutos; separados, eles secam e são queimados. Com esta comparação, o Ressuscitado nos convida a aprofundarmos nossa comunhão com ele, comparada à estreita ligação que há entre o pé de uva e seus galhos. A nova comunidade que Jesus inaugura é o resultado desta união entre Jesus e os seus discípulos e discípulas. A relação videira/ramos sugere uma união vital: os ramos não têm vida própria fora da videira, mas a videira não existe e não produz frutos sem os ramos! É certamente uma boa notícia o fato de fazermos parte tão estreita da vida de Jesus. É o dom da sua ressurreição. Da nossa parte, o compromisso é produzir frutos. Cada pessoa é chamada a fazer valer a vida nova recebida como dom da páscoa no batismo. Sabemos que estamos unidos à videira se produzirmos frutos de justiça. A eucaristia, celebrada com o fruto da videira, é certamente um momento significativo nesta aliança entre o Cristo e sua comunidade, onde o Cristo/videira se visibiliza na comunidade/ramos, e onde a comunidade se apresenta visivelmente centrada no Cristo. Na feliz expressão do Concílio Vaticano II, a liturgia é fonte e cume da vida cristã, lugar onde se busca a seiva para produção de frutos e onde se renova o dinamismo da vida. The 23rd Annual Pope St. John XXIII National Seminary Golf Tournament is scheduled for Monday, May 18th, at The Weston Golf Club. To register, call Kate Folan at or visit MASS IN HONOR OF PATRON SAINT OF CANCER PATIENTS On Wednesday May 13 (Ascension Thursday Eve) a liturgy will be celebrated at 6:30 PM in honor of St. Peregrine at the Immaculate Conception Church, E. Merrimack Street Lowell. St. Peregrine is the Patron Saint of cancer patients and is the saint many cancer patients, family members, and friends pray to for comfort and strength. St. Peregrine lived in the 14h century and was afflicted with cancer of the leg and miraculously cured the evening prior to an operation to amputate his leg. During this Mass the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick will be offered to cancer patients and any who wish to partake of this Sacrament of God s healing. All are invited to come and pray with and for those afflicted with cancer.
