2 Dear Parishioners, Pastor s Note Last week we have begun in our parish a new session of Bible study that will go on for five consecutive weeks. The theme is: A Biblical Walk through the Mass. We have about 30 people coming to that class and we wished, of course, we could reach all of you so that everyone refreshes his understanding of the importance of the Eucharist. Since it s very difficult to do that for various reasons, in the next few weeks I would like to try to reflect on what really MASS is for us, Catholic Christians. Going to Mass has always been a key sign of a committed Catholic, from those first Christians who met in their houses for the breaking of bread (Acts 2:42,46), to Catholics who risked their lives by celebrating Mass during times of persecution, to those Catholics today who make a conscious choice to take an active part in the life and worship of the Church. In every century there have been Catholics who have opted out of Church s worship, but taking part in the Mass, above all on Sundays, has always been seen as central and crucial for living fully the Catholic faith and life. Coming to Mass, taking part in a Catholic Eucharist every Sunday, is still the main visible sign of being a Catholic. Our Catechism of the Catholic Church states that living the Mass, taking an active part in it and allowing its power to transform our lives is what being a Catholic is all about. It even says that the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith (1327), the Sacrament of sacraments, and it remains the center of Church s life (1343). Why? Because it contains and makes present the living mystery of Christ and his saving work of bringing the whole human race into communion with his Father. The Catechism reminds us of God s overall plan by stating the simple truth that God draws close to us so that we can share his own life; He calls us to seek him, know him and love him; He calls us together into the unity of Sacramental Information Baptism Contact the Parish office to arrange for baptismal preparation. Baptisms are celebrated monthly except during Lent. Call the Parish office. Rosary The Rosary is recited daily after the 8 am Mass and before the 5:30 pm Mass on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Hispanic Community has a Rosary Hour every Monday at 6 pm in the Rectory Chapel. his family, the Church. This is the key to understanding the mystery of the Eucharist. In other words, we come to Mass to share in the wonder of our Father s love, to participate in the saving work of Jesus his Son, and to be transformed by the Spirit of holiness. From our Sunday celebration, we go forth together to be and live what we have celebrated. The proper understanding of what we have celebrated together is that for the rest of the week our life as Christian communities, families and individuals FLOWS from the Mass and reminds us that there is a greater life to come. In the Eucharist we already share that heavenly life, and look forward to its fulfillment: We hope to enjoy for ever the vision of your glory (Eucharistic Prayer 3). There is such spiritual depth in the celebration of a Mass that can only be grasped if each one of us individually puts an effort into improving our understanding of what we really celebrate Sunday after Sunday. It depends upon the way we occupy that place. ~St. Therese of Lisieux A brief note from the Bishop My Dear People, We have received news today that one of our priests, Monsignor Hien Minh Nguyen, has been arrested on charges of bank fraud and tax evasion. The Diocese has been cooperating with an ongoing criminal investigation by the Internal Revenue Service into the conduct of Monsignor Hien since October of Any facts in the matter are the part of the investigation, and only the IRS has the authority to make disclosures at a time of its choosing. We do not know when that might be. At the request of the IRS, we have had minimal direct communication with Monsignor Hien. He is on a personal leave of absence, which he requested. 5 Scripture Readings for THIS Sunday First Reading: Acts 4:8-12 Psalm: 118 Second Reading: 1 John 3:1-2 Gospel Reading: John 10:11-18 This Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as Good Shepherd Sunday. Today we listen to the words of the Lord as he refers to himself as the good shepherd who lays down his life for the sheep. It is sometimes so difficult for us to grasp the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life for the sake of someone else. This is especially true in a society that places high value on power and personal advancement, often at the cost of trampling on other people in order to climb the ladder. Today s scriptures point to the one we are called to emulate the one who lays down his life for his sheep. 6 Boletim Paroquial Português Reflexão por: João Pereira Arruda Jesus se nos apresenta neste Domingo como o Bom Pastor. A profissão de pastor não era então, e continua a não ser nos nossos dias uma profissão de prestígio ou atraente para chamamento vocacional dos mais novos. Pastor continua ser e é sim uma profissão que inspira confiança, humildade e honestidade; qualidades essas que agradam a Deus e que Jesus Cristo neste Evangelho de hoje a compara com Deus. Tal como o bom pastor, conhece as suas ovelhas as protege dos lobos e de todos os perigos; assim também Deus, porque nos quer sãos e escorreitos vela por nós e nos dá mecanismos para usarmos no nosso viver e sermos felizes. Se Jesus Cristo viesse nos nossos dias qual profissão ou vocação Ele escolheria para nos ilustrar Deus? Político? Muito possivelmente que não; - falta-lhe as qualidades do bom pastor. Advogado? No zelo de defender a lei da letra leva-o a salvar os criminais e a culpar as vítimas. Jornalista? Interessam-se mais pelo sensacionalismo do que pela divulgação da verdade. Padre? O afastamento do povo da Igreja e falta de confiança nestes, faz com que as ovelhas não os sigam. Como nos nossos dias continua a haver pastores e estes têem as mesmas qualidades dos pastores de então, muito possivelmente estes continuariam a ser os escolhidos para modelo que Jesus escolheria para descrever Deus. Aqui está o chamamento para estar-mos atentos ás necessidades dos outros. No processo de escolhermos menanismos de vivermos em alegria e felecidade tem que haver lugar para realmente querer-mos que os outros sejam também alegres e felizes e neste processo estamos a copiar o modelo (imagem) do Bom Pastor. Festival Anual de Saint Clare No fim de semana de de Maio próximo a nossa paróquia promove o seu festival anual. Nesta promoção está uma oportunidade de angariação de meios que são tão necessários á administração e manutenção da nossa paróquia e escola paroquial. A Comissão organizadora está a preparar um eleborado programa que envolva e atraía as comunidades de diferentes culturas que fazem parte desta paróquia. Os livros de bilhete de rifa já foram enviados e pede-se a todos que os receberam que vendem ou comprem estes bilhetes. Por favor preencemnos e depois façam o favor de os depositar num dos cestos da colecta. As pessoas que queirem aprticipar num leilão silencioso e possam oferecer um cabaz de compras ou algo que suscite interesse e seja de bom uso, façam o favor de comunicar com as senhoras Connie Silveira ou Mary Correia. Mais do que tudo marquem essas datas no vosso calendário social e sejam activos neste festival. A presença da comunidade portuguesa é importante. Novo Grupo de Oração Um novo Grupo de Oração está a formar-se na nossa comunidade. Este irá reunir-se todas as últimas sextasfeiras de cada mês, ás 7:30 hrs pm. As reuniões do novo grupo iniciam-se com a reza do terço e termina com cânticos brasileiros de louvor ao Senhor. Este novo grupo dirige por este Boletim um convite a toda a comunidade. Um Santo e Alegre Domingo para todos!!! Boletín Parroquial Español Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe Imágenes antiguas de Cristo lo mostraban como un pastor joven cargando una ovejita en sus hombros. Él mismo se presenta como el buen Pastor (Juan 10:11). Esta imagen que nos conforta con el amor de Cristo, es en realidad una imagen radical. Hay que saber dos cosas sobre el pastor palestino de aquella época: 1) los pastores eran considerados sucios, peligrosos y ladrones, y 2) cuando cargaban una ovejita era porque ellos mismos le habían quebrado la pierna. Porque Jesús se describe como uno de ellos? Jesús ve más allá de las apariencias y los estereotipos, y se asocia con aquellas personas que la sociedad de su tiempo odiaba y marginaba. Por voluntad propia decide estar entre los pobres y despreciados. Si Jesús viniera a la tierra en nuestro tiempo, se describiría a sí mismo como el buen inmigrante. En cuanto a la ovejita sobre el hombre: en casos extremos, de ovejas rebeldes que se alejaban del rebaño, los pastores tenían que quebrarles la pierna para cargarlas sobre los hombros. De esta manera las amansaban para que no se alejaran de él. Dios no hace esto en nosotros, pero tampoco nos evita el sufrimiento. Subasta Silenciosa Durante el Festival se tendrá una subasta silenciosa de arcones o canastas de regalo. Ya tenemos algunas pero nos gustaría tener muchas más y le pedimos su cooperación donando una canasta llena con artículos que a usted y su familia les gustaría tener. Si usted no puede traer una canasta pero tiene algún articulo para donar y así formar la canasta por favor comuníquese con Berenice López después de misa o llamando al Misa al Aire Libre El domingo 17 de Mayo, a las 11:00am, en el área del estacionamiento tendremos nuestra tradicional Misa trilingüe al aire libre, (inglés, portugués y español). Tome nota de que no tendremos nuestra misa en españole este día.
