Duração oficial do Programa de Estudos 4 anos/8 semestres/40 semanas de estudo a tempo inteiro por ano/240 créditos ECTS. Inclui 6 semestres de dissertação. 4. Requisito(s) de acesso Titulares do grau de Mestre em Matemática ou em domínios afins cujo curriculum demonstre uma adequada preparação científica e quem cumpra o estipulado nas alíneas b) e c) do artigo 30º do Decreto- Lei nº 74/2006, de 24 de Março. 5. Regime de estudo: A tempo inteiro. 6. Requisitos do programa de estudos O programa doutoral em Matemática e Aplicações enquadra-se numa proposta conjunta do Departamento de Matemática da Universidade de Aveiro (DMAT-UA) e do Departamento de Matemática da Universidade do Minho (DMAT-UM). Neste contexto, o Grau de Doutor em Matemática e Aplicações é atribuído no âmbito do capítulo VI (Atribuição de graus e diplomas em associação), alínea b) do artigo 43º do Decreto-Lei n.º 74/2006 de 24 de Março. O presente programa doutoral cumpre-se em duas fases distintas: o 1º ano lectivo, composto por componentes de ensino e de investigação, e os restantes 3 anos dedicados exclusivamente ao desenvolvimento do trabalho de investigação, preparação de publicações e respectiva divulgação em Seminários ou Conferências e escrita da tese de doutoramento. As componentes de ensino do 1º ano são constituídas por: duas disciplinas, D1 e D2, de espectro largo dentro da matemática, que devem contribuir para a cultura matemática do doutorando e deixar portas abertas para um eventual cruzamento de áreas na actividade posterior do mesmo; duas disciplinas, D3 e D4, dependentes da especialização escolhida;

3 eventualmente, duas disciplinas, M1 e M2, que poderão ser escolhidas de entre disciplinas de Mestrado ou Doutoramento em funcionamento na UA e na UM, quer com o objectivo de completar formação matemática que o aluno deveria ter previamente adquirido, quer com o objectivo de obter formação complementar relevante fora da matemática. As componentes de investigação do 1º ano são constituídas por: Laboratório de Investigação, no qual o aluno terá oportunidade de desenvolver pequenos trabalhos de investigação, eventualmente em mais do que uma área, e mostrar a sua capacidade para a prática da investigação, permitindo-lhe escolher a especialização em que pretende doutorar-se; Preparação do Projecto de Tese, no qual o aluno dará início à investigação dentro da especialidade escolhida, reunindo, em particular, informações relativas ao projecto da tese que terá de desenvolver nos anos seguintes. Os interesses científicos do aluno e o seu percurso anterior determinarão o conjunto de disciplinas do tipo D e, eventualmente, do tipo M em que cada doutorando deverá obter aprovação. A escolha do percurso do aluno dentro deste programa cabe ao competente órgão científico. Os alunos poderão ser dispensados da frequência de uma ou mais unidades do 1º ano curricular, em caso de reconhecimento de elevado ou equivalente mérito à formação ou experiência científica dos mesmos de acordo com os regulamentos de Estudos de Terceiro Ciclo, da Universidade de Aveiro e da Universidade do Minho. A aprovação no Laboratório de Investigação e nas disciplinas D1, D2, D3 e D4 dão origem à atribuição de um Diploma de Estudos Avançados em Matemática (DEA-M). A aprovação na Preparação do Projecto de Tese, juntamente com a obtenção do DEA-M, dá ao aluno o acesso aos restantes anos do ciclo de estudos. O 1º semestre deste 3º ciclo está estruturado de modo a não só despertar o interesse de potenciais alunos que ainda não tenham escolhido uma área específica de investigação, mas também a auxiliá-los nessa escolha, mormente no que toca ao reconhecimento de capacidades de produzir trabalho original de boa qualidade na fronteira do conhecimento da Matemática. No espaço a que chamámos Laboratório de Investigação, o aluno terá oportunidade de experimentar o que é fazer investigação em uma ou mais dessas especialidades e, simultaneamente, aperceber-se daquela para a qual se sente mais vocacionado. Pretendemos também lidar com a realidade da coexistência de candidatos provenientes do sistema pré-bolonha. Neste sentido, a estrutura adoptada para o 1º ano do 3º ciclo proposto permite e facilita a

4 integração destes candidatos, bem como de candidatos oriundos de 2º ciclos de áreas afins. Em particular, prevemos a possibilidade de frequência de duas disciplinas semestrais, no 1º ano, que poderão servir para completar formação matemática que o aluno deveria ter previamente adquirido. Em alternativa, em vez de disciplinas com esse objectivo, poderá optar-se por escolher disciplinas que diversifiquem a formação fora da matemática, o que fará sentido em especializações mais aplicadas onde seja de prever uma posterior inserção no mercado de trabalho. Concebemos o 2º semestre deste 3º ciclo já mais vocacionado para a área de especialização entretanto escolhida, incluindo disciplinas específicas e a Preparação do Projecto de Tese. Os 3 anos seguintes correspondem ao habitual trabalho de investigação com vista à elaboração de uma tese de doutoramento em matemática, na área de especialização escolhida. 7. Access requirement(s) Second cycle course (Master degree) in Mathematics or other related domains, if a sound scientific preparation is proved by the curriculum vitae, or if the conditions expressed in paragraphs a) and b) of the article 30º of Decreto-Lei nº74/2006, de 24 de Março are fulfilled. 5. Mode of study Full time. 6. Programme requirements The doctoral programme in Mathematics and Applications is a joint proposal of the Department of Mathematics of the University of Aveiro (DMAT-UA) and the Department of Mathematics of the University of Minho (DMAT-UM). The present doctoral programme is accomplished in two different phases: the 1st school year has both teaching and research components, the remaining 3 years are dedicated to research work, publishing, giving seminars and talks at conferences and writing the thesis. The 1st year components are: Two courses, D1 and D2, with broadband within Mathematics, which should contribute to the students mathematical culture and allow an eventual field interchange; Two courses, D3 and D4, which depend on the chosen specialisation; Eventually, two courses, M1 and M2, which can be chosen from the Master or Doctoral courses offered by the universities of Minho and Aveiro, with the aim of completing mathematical background which should have been acquired before as well as achieving complementing skills in other areas. The 1st year research components are:

8 Research Laboratory, in which the students have the opportunity to develop small research works, eventually in more than one area, and show their ability in research practises, allowing them to choose their specialisation; Thesis Project Preparation, in which the students start research work in the chosen specialisation, gathering, in particular, relevant information for the research project to be developed in the following years. The scientific interests of the students together with their previous experience will determine the set of courses of type D and, eventually, of type M in which they must pass. The students course choices in this programme are subject to the agreement of a scientific committee. The students may also be set free from attending one or more courses in case of recognition of a high level of scientific experience, in agreement with the regulations of the 3rd cycle of studies of the universities of Minho and Aveiro. The successful accomplishment of the Research Laboratory and of courses D1, D2, D3 and D4 entitles the students with the Diploma of Advanced Studies in Mathematic (DEA-M). If the students are successful in the Thesis Project Preparation then this, together with the DEA-M, gives them access to the remaining 3 years of the programme. The first semester of this programme is structured in order to open new windows to students which have not yet chosen a specific research area as well as to help them in that choice, in particular with respect to the recognition of the capability of producing original and internationally recognised research work. In the Research Laboratory, the students will have the opportunity to experience research in one or more of those specific areas and, at the same time, realise which one will they choose. We also deal with the coexistence of candidates from the pre-bolonha system. In this sense, the 1st year course structure allows an easy integration of those candidates with a mathematical background as well as candidates from related areas. In particular, we allow the attendance of two courses which may complement the mathematical background. As an alternative, those courses may be chosen in order to diversify their knowledge in other fields, which can be specially important in applied areas and towards future nonacademic jobs. The second semester was thought to be more focused on the chosen area of specialisation and includes specialised courses as well as the Thesis Project Preparation. The remaining 3 years correspond to the usual research work towards the writing up of a doctoral thesis.
