3 Editorial Message from the Ambassador I am highly delighted to welcome our esteemed readers to Volume 2 Issue2 of our Newsletter which covers the period August, 2012 to January, During this period, there had been a continued expansion of Kenya s diplomatic representation in South America. Letters of Credence were presented to His Excellency Sebastian Pinera Echenique, President of the Republic of Chile and to Her Excellency Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, President of the Argentine Republic, officially accrediting myself as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kenya to the Republic of Chile and to the Argentine Republic. This makes Brasilia one of Kenya s most important Missions, as it covers the largest geographical area and with the most number of countries. In this particular edition, we stress the expanded relations in the region and as expressed in many of our visits to our countries of accreditation as well as meetings with various stakeholders, we are collaborating with many companies and governments to see both trade and development are enhanced. As you will see in the following pages, our main story is on the ground breaking ceremony of the Konza Techno city presided by His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki on 23rd January, The master plan of the city is based on successful new town projects around the world put together by an international team of experts, drawing on best practice from places such as the United Kingdom, China and Brazil to ensure global competitiveness. The city will feature world-class civic and commercial architecture including a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) technology park and a high campus playing host to a number of blue chip companies. Konza City promises to create an ICT hub of unrivalled stature in the region under a private-public sector partnership. The accomplishment of this city will be a dream come true. Commercial relations between Kenya and Brazil have also continued to prosper and flourish. A testimony to this is the acquisition of the 12th Embraer aircraft by Kenya Airways, who have been receiving an aircraft a month for the past seven months, and will continue for the next five months. This was a mile stone in that this particular craft was the 900th off the Embraer s production line. The Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) was also not left behind. KTB engaged more with Brazil. The Embassy in Brazil and the KTB participated in the 38thAnnual Brazilian Tour Operators Association- BRAZTOA Exhibition held in Sao Paulo from the 20th to 23rdSeptember, The team had earlier on conducted tourism promotion activities from 12th to 19th September, 2012, which involved Office-to-Office Sales Calls in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo cities; combined with one-on-one business meetings in Sao Paulo. Sports also featured prominently during this period. There has been a steady stream of Kenyan athletes into Brazil and races have been won. Kenyans, true to their reputation, have conquered the Brazilian long distance races that took place in the different Brazilian cities. As usual, I hope that this issue will be an interesting reading to all our readers. H.E. Amb. As Cartas Credenciais foram apresentadas à Sua Excelência Sebastián Piñera Echenique, Presidente da República do Chile e à Sua Excelência, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Presidente da República da Argentina, me credenciando oficialmente como Embaixador Extraordinário e Plenipotenciário da República do Quênia na República do Chile e na República da Argentina. Isso faz de Brasília uma das missões mais importantes do Kenya pois engloba a maior área geográfica e o maior número de países. Nesta edição especial, destacamos as amplas relações na região e, como manifestado em muitas das nossas visitas aos nossos países de acreditação bem como em reuniões com os vários responsáveis interessados, estamos colaborando com muitas empresas e governos para reforçarmos junto o comércio e o desenvolvimento. Como verá nas páginas seguintes, o nosso relato principal é sobre a cerimônia de inauguração da cidade Tecnológica de Konza, KONZA TECHNO, presidida por Sua Excelência o Presidente Mwai Kibaki em 23 de Janeiro de O plano diretor da cidade é baseado em projetos de cidades novas, bem sucedidos, elaborados por uma equipe internacional de especialistas, com base nas melhores práticas de localidades tais como o Reino Unido, a China e o Brasil, para garantir a competitividade global. A cidade contará com uma classe cívica mundial e uma arquitetura comercial, incluindo um parque tecnológico de Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) e um grande setor de entretenimento de anfitrias ligadas à varias companhias de primeira linha. A cidade de Konza promete criar um pólo de TIC de estatura incompáravel na região, sob um espaço de parceria pública-privada. O cumprimento desta cidade será um sonho realizado. As relações comerciais entre Quênia e Brasil também continuaram a prosperar e florescer. A prova disso é a aquisição do 12º avião da aeronave Embraer pela Kenya Airways, que recebeu um avião por mês nos últimos cinco meses, e continuará assim nos cinco próximos meses. Este foi uma peça rara na medida em que este avião particular foi a 900º fora da linha de produção da Embraer. A Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) também não foi deixada para trás. A KTB comprometeu-se mais com o Brasil. A Embaixada do Quênia no Brasil e o KTB participaram do 38va Exposição Annual da Associaçao Brasileira dos Tours Operators BRAZTOA- realizada em São Paulo do 20 a 23 de Setembro de A equipe começou por atividades de promoção de turismo do 12 ao 19 de setembro de 2012, que ocasionou Apelos Financeiros entre Empresas nas cidades de Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo; combinado com reuniões one-on-one de negócios em São Paulo. Durante este período, os esportes também surgiram com destaque. Houve um fluxo constante de atletas quenianos no Brasil e as corridas foram ganhas. Os quenianos, fieis à sua reputação, venceram os brasileiros em corridas de longa distância. Como de costume, eu espero que esta edição esteja uma leitura interessante para todos os nossos leitores. Kirimi Peter Kaberia presents his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Sebastian Pinera Echenique, President of the Republic of Chile officially accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kenya to the Republic of Chile H.E. Kirimi Peter Kaberia presented his Letters of Credence to His Excellency Sebastian Pinera Echenique, President of the Republic of Chile on 28th November, 2012, officially accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kenya to the Republic of Chile, in a colourful ceremony at the O Higgins Salon of the Presidential Palace. While in Chile, Amb. Kirimi Kaberia also held bilateral meetings with various officials at the Ministry of External Relations of Chile, including Amb. James Sinclair Manley, the Chief of Protocol; Amb. Rodrigo Gaete Vidal, Director of Bilateral Affairs; Amb. Luis Lillo, Director of Africa & Middle East Department; and Amb. Jorge D. Bahna, Director In-charge of the Chile Agency for International Cooperation. The meetings focused on bilateral cooperation between Kenya and Chile, highlighting areas which should be enhanced to further strengthen the relations. These included energy, agriculture, irrigation, good governance, foreign relations through the diplomatic academy and trade and investment sectors, Amb. Kirimi Kaberia briefed the officials on the Kenya-Chile relations, highlighting the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to implement online taxation systems, currently being used in Kenya as a huge success, and called for the finalization of other pending agreements in the various sectors to achieve the same levels of successes. The Ambassador was accompanied by his spouse Mrs. Serah N. Kirimi, Mr. Glenns E.T. Etyang and Mr. Kenny Simiyu from the Embassy. S.E. Enquanto no Chile, o Emb. Kirimi Kaberia manteve também reuniões bilaterais com vários funcionários do Ministério das Relações Exteriores do Chile, incluindo o Emb. James Sinclair Manley, Chefe de Protocolo; o Emb. Rodrigo Gaete Vidal, Diretor de Assuntos Bilaterais; o Emb. Luis Lillo, Diretor do Departamento da África e do Médio Oriente; e o Emb. Jorge D. Kirimi Kaberia informou aos oficiais sobre as relações Quênia- Chile, ressaltando o Memorando de Consenso (MoU) assinado pela Secretaria da Receita do Quênia (KRA), para implementar sistemas de taxação on-line, sendo atualmente usados no Quênia com o maior sucesso, e chamou para a finalização de outros acordos pendentes em vários setores para alcançar os mesmos níveis de sucesso. Dr. Amado Boudou, Vice President of the Argentine Republic, In-Charge of Executive Powers, who received the Letters on behalf of Her Excellency Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, President of the Argentine Republic officially accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kenya to the Argentine Republic Presentation of Credentials in the Argentine Republic On 2nd October, 2012, H.E. Kirimi Peter Kaberia presented his Letters of Credence to Her Excellency Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, President of the Argentine Republic, officially accrediting him as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Kenya to the Argentine Republic, in a ceremony that took place at the Government House. The Letters of Credence were received on behalf of the Argentine President by H.E. Dr. Amado Boudou, Vice President of the Argentine Republic, In-Charge of Executive Powers. After the presentation of Letters of Credence, H.E the Ambassador laid a wreath of flowers in tribute to the Argentine Liberator General San Martin at the San Martin Square of the Palacio San Martin, and thereafter inspected a guard of honour from the General San Martin Grenadiers Regiment. While in Argentina, H.E. the Ambassador also held bilateral meetings with Amb. Bibiana L. Jones, Director of Africa at the Ministry of External Relations and Culture of Argentina; where discussions focused on vital areas to enhance Kenya and Argentina relations, particularly in technology transfer in electricity management and power generation, education, agriculture, culture and sports, trade and diplomatic institutes. H.E the Ambassador also met the ATM Consortium a consortium that is involved in agri-business sector and are keen in expanding into Kenya. Em 02 de outubro de 2012, S.E. As Cartas Credenciais foram recebidas, em nome do presidente da Argentina, por S.E. Dr. Amado Boudou, vicepresidente da República da Argentina, Encarregado do Poder Executivo. Após a apresentação das Cartas Credenciais, S.E. o Embaixador depositou uma coroa de flores em homenagem ao Libertador Argentino, o General San Martin, na Praça San Martin do Palácio San Martin, e depois visitou uma guarda de honra do Regimento de Grenadiers do General San Martin. Enquanto na Argentina, S.E. o Embaixador presidiu também reuniões bilaterais com a Emb. Bibiana L. Konza City Photos Courtesy: Presidential Press Service-PPS President Kibaki Launches Konza Technology City January, 2013 Kenya took the first step in creating a techno city in Africa with the ground-breaking ceremony for the 2,000 hectare Konza Technology City at Malili, in Makueni County, 160 kilometres from the heart Nairobi. The ground breaking ceremony presided by His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki on 23rd January, The master plan of the city is based on successful new town projects around the world put together by an international team of experts, drawing on best practice from places such as the United Kingdom, China and Brazil to ensure global competitiveness. The city will feature world-class civic and commercial architecture including a Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) technology park and a high campus playing host to a number of blue chip companies. Konza City also promises to create an ICT hub of unrivalled stature in the region under a private-public sector partnership. Together with the proposed Lamu Sea Port and new roads to be constructed to open up the northern half of Kenya for development, the city is a major component of Vision 2030, a blue print which envisages Kenya becoming a newly industrialized and middle-income country by the year During the launch, H.E the President, who throughout his two terms in office as President has diligently focused on infrastructure development, told those present that What is important is that you should continue with the development momentum we have gained. Think of the next city to build, think of the next road to construct, and focus on how to improve the lives of Kenyans. H.E President Kibaki also emphasized that the techno-city will be developed in phases. Konza Techno City will operate under the Special Economic Zone Policy and the Special Economic Zone Act that the Government developed in order to deliver a targeted 200,000 jobs. Both the Act and the Policy present a package of incentives for local and foreign investors, President Kibaki said. The ground breaking came with revelations that multinational and local companies have lined up to participate in the construction of the techno-city, giving hope that the multibillion project could take off. Among the local investors that have already committed to investing in the project include Safaricom, Craft Silicon, Multimedia University, University of Nairobi,Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and Nairobi Hospital. Over 20 international companies have also registered interest, with Internet search giant Google, the fast growing Chinese network and handset maker Huawei and makers of the popular BlackBerry (Research in Motion) taking the lead. Others include, Shapoorji Pallonji Group from India, Toyota, and Telemax Technology Corporation from Taiwan. The President announced that all machinery have been put in place to make the project a success story. He encouraged local and international investors to take advantage of the proposed ICT city and contribute towards its success. He said that the Kenya Railways Corporation was in the process of developing a high speed and capacity standard gauge railway from Mombasa to Malaba with the ICT city being included. Further, a dual carriage road to be funded by the World Bank will kick off in January next year with a time frame of two years. 7 Development Authority, the body that will oversee implementation of the project estimated to cost 850 billion Kenya shillings. A Chief Executive Officer and an Executive team will oversee the project. The government has already begun the search for the second master delivery partner to support development plans for the city. The Ministry has called on experts to express interest in supporting the government and the Konza Technopolis Development Authority in planning the first phase of the city. The role of the second master delivery partner will be to provide professional services to supplement the capacity of the Konza Technolopolis Development Authority. Financing the Project The project will be financed through a government and the private sector partnership. The tech park is expected to position Kenya as a leading ICT hub in Africa by leveraging and expanding the country s technology focused industries. Konza will be a very new kind of African city for a very new kind of Africa. It will be at the forefront of a technology-led business revolution which will transform Kenya and Africa. Business Opportunity Konza is where Africa s silicon savannah begins. A central location with excellent transport and communication links, the Konza Technological City offers all the benefits of a Greenfield, clean sheet site which is nevertheless right at the centre of things. It is 60 kilometres from the heart of Nairobi; 50 kilometres from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport; 380 kilometres from Mombasa and its ports; and the railway within 4 kilometres. The commercial engine of the new city will be a cluster of technology business, financial services firms and other enterprises centered on the state-of-the art business and Science Park. International IT suppliers are designing and will implement world-class infrastructure for the new city to meet global ICT demands. It includes a landmark for shopping mall with major retailers, office blocks built to the standards multinational companies expect and hotels designed for international business travelers and tourists. It is also planned that the Kenya International Finance Centre will be located at Konza. Environmental standards Sustainability is at the heart of the masterplan for Konza. The new city is designed to meet the highest international environmental standards with renewable energy generation, recycling systems and fast and attractive but low cost public transport embedded in the masterplan. Sustainability will not stop at the city limits. Links with Kenya Wildlife Conservancy will ensure that the new city will make a significant contribution to the wildlife conservation, safeguarding the unique ecology of the savannah whilst promoting accessibility to Kenya s special environmental habitats. There is also room for an eco-friendly stadium, public entertainment venues, concert halls and sports facilities. Sua Excelência o Presidente Kibaki também enfatizou que a cidade-tecno será desenvolvido em fases Konza Techno City funcionará sob a Política e Lei da Zona Económica Especial que o Governo desenvolveu a fim de atingir uma meta de empregos. Tanto a Lei como a Política hão de a presentar um pacote de incentivos para os investidores locais e estrangeiros, disse o presidente Kibaki. A inauguração teve revelações de que empresas multinacionais e locais se reuniram para participarem da construção da cidade-tecno, dando esperança de que o projeto estimado em multi-bilhões poderia decolar. Entre os investidores locais, que já se comprometeram a investir no projeto, podemos citar Safaricom, Craft Silicone, Multimedia University, Universidade de Nairobi, Universidade de Agricultura e Tecnologia Jomo Kenyatta e o Hospital de Nairobi. Mais de 20 empresas internacionais também manifestaram interesse, como o gigante em pesquisa da Internet, Google, a crescente rede chinêsa e fabricante de celulares Huawei e os fabricantes do popular BlackBerry (Research in Motion) assumindo um papel principal. As outras incluem, Shapoorji Pallonji Grupo da Índia, Toyota e Telemax Technology Corporation de Taiwan. Diretoria de Desenvolvimento de Konza Technopolis O Ministro da Informação e Comunicações, Seu Exmo. Samuel Poghisio designou l?deres para representarem a Diretoria do Desenvolvimento de Konza Technopolis, órgão que supervisionará a implementação do projeto cujo valor é estimado a milhões shillings quenianos. 8 do segundo principal parceiro para apoiar os planos de desenvolvimento da cidade. O Ministério pediu aos especialistas para manifestarem interesse no apoio do governo e da Diretoria de Desenvolvimento de Konza Technopolis no planejamento da primeira fase da cidade. O papel do segundo principal parceiro será a prestação de serviços profissionais para complementar a competência da Diretoria de Desenvolvimento de Konza Technolopolis. Financiamento do Projeto O projeto será financiado através de um governo e com a parceria do setor privado. O parque tecnológico é esperado para colocar o Quêniacomo um líder central de TIC na África, privilegiando e expandindo a tecnologia do país focalizada nas indústrias. Konza será um novo tipo de cidade Africana, para um novo tipo de África. Oportunidade de negócio Konza é onde começa a savana arenosa Africana. Uma localização central, com transportes e comunicações excelentes conecta a Cidade Tecnológica de Konza, oferecendo, todavia, todos os benefícios de um sítio Greenfield (Espaço Verde), s?tio de ficha limpa e apropriado, ao centro dos negócios. Ela fica a 60 km do centro de Nairobi; a 50 quilômetros do Aeroporto Internacional Jomo Kenyatta; a 380 quilômetros de Mombasa e seus portos, e em cerca de 4 quilômetros da estrade de ferro. Normas ambientais A sustentabilidade está no coração do plano diretor de Konza. A nova cidade foi projetada para atender os mais altos modelos ambientais internacionais incluindo a geração da energia renovável, o sistema de reciclagem e o sistema de transporte público rápido e atraente, mas também de baixo custo adaptado ao plano geral. A sustentabilidade não vai se limitar às margens da cidade. Parcerias com Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (defensora do ambiênte natural) garantirão que a nova cidade contribuirá de maneira significante na conservação da vida selvagem, preservando a única ecologia da savana, em um contexto de promoçao de acessibilidade aos componentes ambientais especiais do Quênia. Há também um espaço para um estádio ecológico, áreas de entretenimento público, salas de concertos e instalações desportivas. The East African Community is represented in Brazil by the Embassies of the Republic of Kenya, United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Burundi. Overview The East African Community (EAC) is the regional intergovernmental organization of the Republic of Kenya, Republic of Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Republic of Rwanda and Republic of Burundi with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania. The East African Community was first established in 1967 under H.E Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya, H.E. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, President of the United Republic of Tanzania, and H.E. Dr. Milton Obote, President of the Republic of Uganda. The Community was dissolved in The revival of the Community came after the Treaty for Establishment of the East African Community was signed on 30th November, 1999 and entered into force on 7th July, 2000 following its ratification by the original three Partner States Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. The Republic of Rwanda and the Republic of Burundi acceded to the EAC Treaty on 18th June 2007 and became full Members of the Community with effect from 1st July Embaixada iça a bandeira da Comunidade da Africa Oriental A Embaixada do Quênia em Brasília içou a bandeira da Comunidade da África Oriental, tanto na Chancelaria como na Residência Oficial, em Brasília, no Brasil na quarta-feira, 15 de agosto de Este foi de acordo com a emenda da Lei do Ato 2003 seção 7 sobre o emblema da Comunidade da África Oriental, proposta pela Assembleia Legislativa da África do Leste durante a 4ª reunião de sua 5 ª Sessão realizada em abril de 2012, que requisitou que os Estados-Membros içem a Bandeira da Comunidade da África Oriental ao lado de suas bandeiras nacionais em suas embaixadas através do mundo. KIRIMI GIVES A TALK ON KENYA TO NEW DIPLOMATS AT DIPLOMATIC INSTITUTE H.E Ambassador Kirimi Kaberia on 6th August, 2012, gave a talk to new diplomats at the Rio Branco Institute, Brazil s Foreign Service Institute, during the Institute s Africa Week. Amb. Kirimi presented to the new diplomats the Kenya-Brazil relations which started way back in 1967 when Brazil opened its Embassy in Nairobi; Kenya s participation in regional organizations, namely the East African Community, the Common Market for Easters and Southern Africa-COMESA; and the Great Lakes Region The presentation also covered Kenya s role in the peace efforts in the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes Region, particularly highlighting the role Kenya played in the peace efforts in Somalia which led to the formation of the transitional Federal Government-TFG; and the negotiations in Sudan that led to the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) in 2005 between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People s Liberation Movement-SPLM representing South Sudan, ending almost three decades of conflict. The Africa Week at Rio Branco Institute is organized by the Africa Department at the Ministry of External Relations of Brazil, and brings together Ambassadors from the African countries accredited to Brasilia, together with Ministry of External Relations officials and the students from the Rio Branco Institute to share insights on numerous topics, from the socio-political, economic, and cultural matters and relations. ANTONIO D ANDREA VERA PASSES ON Dr. A. Vera (R) with Amb. Kirimi Kaberia during the National Day of Kenya Celebrations on 12th December, 2012 Dr. Roberto Antonio D Andrea Vera, a good friend of Kenya passed away 26th December, Dr. Vera, a lawyer based in Rio de Janeiro city, was indeed a good friend of the Kenya, having participated in numerous Kenyan events and occasions organized by the Kenya Embassy in Brasilia, including the Kenya-Brazil Business hosted by H.E Mwai Kibaki, President of the Republic of Kenya held on 21st June, 2012 when the President was in Brazil for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development Rio+20; and most recently he attended Kenya s 49th Independence Day celebrations held on 12th December, 2012 at the Kenya Embassy Official residence. Dr. Vera was this year to become Kenya s First Honorary Consul in Rio de Janeiro. Dr. Roberto Antonio D Andrea Vera, um grande amigo do Quênia, faleceu em 26 de dezembro de Dra. Vera ia ser nomeado este ano, Primeiro Cônsul Honorário do Quênia, no Rio de Janeiro. 13 KENYA AIRWAYS ACQUIRES ANOTHER E-JET FROM EMBRAER Amb. Kirimi Kaberia (C) talks to Mr. Paulo Cesar de Silva, President of Embraer Commercial Aviation (L) and Mr. Francis Musila, Head of Kenya Airways Fleet Development during the ceremony. On 10th October, 2012, the National Carrier, Kenya Airways added another Embraer E-jet to its rapidly growing fleet as it targets to expand its destinations in Africa while increasing frequencies on existing routes. The aircraft, the 900th E-Jet to be produced by the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer, and registered 5Y- FFC was delivered in a special ceremony at Embraer s head quarters in Sao Jose dos Campos, Brazil; which was graced by H.E Kirimi P. Kaberia, Ambassador of Kenya to Brazil, Kenya Airways representatives led by Mr. Francis Musila, Head of Kenya Airways Fleet Development, and Embraer officials led by Mr. Paulo Cesar de Silva, President of Embraer Commercial Aviation and Mr. Mathieu Dusquenoy, Vice President of Embraer Commercial Aviation Middle East & Africa. In his statement, Ambassador Kirimi congratulated both Embraer for the successful manufacture of the 900th E-jet, and Kenya Airways for the acquisition, which he termed as a milestone for Em 10 de outubro de 2012, a Transportadora Nacional, Kenya Airways acrescentou outro E-Jet da Embraer à sua frota, cada vez crescente, visando expandir seus destinos na África, aumentando freqüências em rotas já existentes. A aeronave 900 E-Jet, a ser produzida pela fabricante brasileira de aeronaves Embraer e registrada sob a designação 5Y-FFC, foi entregue em uma cerimônia especial no Quartel Geral da Embraer em São José dos Campos, Brasil; a cerimônia foi honrada com a presença de S.E. Kirimi P. He further informed that the Kenya Government recognizes the role that Kenya Airways plays in the transport sector which is an important engine of growth for the Kenyan economy. He further noted that the close business alliance between Kenya Airways and Embraer is essential in helping the airline achieve its vision of opening up new routes in its ever growing African network, all which will go a long way to promoting tourism, trade, investments and cultural exchanges between Kenya and many countries that fall within the Kenya Airways network of destination. On his part, Mr. Francis Musila, representing the Kenya Airways Chief Executive Officer Dr. Titus Naikuni, informed that increasing the number of Embraer aircraft in Kenya Airways will help the airline consolidate its presence on the continent where it flies to 46 destinations. He noted that it is a real honor for Kenya Airways to be part of this highlight in Embraer s history, by receiving the 900th E-Jet, which he termed as being a versatile aircraft suited to our growth ambitions on the African continent. Mr. Musila also informed that given its mid-range capabilities, the E190 jet ably supports Kenya Airways plans to fly new routes and increase frequencies on existing ones, while affording passengers excellent cabin comfort and enhanced operating efficiency. This new acquisition brings closer Kenya Airways vision of flying to every capital in Africa in the next few years. Embraer President of Commercial Aviation, Mr. Paulo Cesar Silva noted that the delivery of the 900th E-Jet is a great achievement for Embraer, and they were very pleased to deliver this aircraft to Kenya Airways, one of Africa s leading airlines, only eight years after the first E-Jets entered revenue service in Mr. Silva informed that the E-Jet was the first aircraft to change traditional thinking about 70 to 120-seat aircraft and revolutionizing regional transportation by bringing more connectivity or frequencies to passengers who can now fly when they want and not when it is operationally feasible for the carrier. Kenya Airways has seven more E190 aircraft on order with a delivery each month between October and February Kenya Airways E190 aircrafts are configured in a dual-class layout with 96 seats: 12 in business class and 84 in economy, with individual screens for every seat. This aircraft joins the Airline s existing fleet of twelve Embraer aircrafts comprising a mixture of five E170s and seven E190s. Currently, KQ uses Embraer E190 aircraft on domestic and short regional routes including Kisumu, Entebbe, Kigali, Bujumbura, Addis Ababa, Djibouti, Maputo, Gaborone, and Nampula. 14 Maurine Chelagat Kipchomba lifts the winner s trophy Kipchomba Extends Kenya s Sterling Performance In Brazil Marathons Kenyan Athlete Maurine Chelagat Kipchomba, overcame competitive athlete, rainy and chilly conditions to win the Race of Kings 2013 Marathon which took place in Brasilia City, having come in as the race favorite and winner of the São Silvestre 2012 edition. The 43rd Edition of the race was flagged off at 19hrs by Secretary of Sports, Julio Ribeiro, and brought together over 12,000 participants, who donated 55 tons of food to be distributed to non-governmental organizations. Participants competed in three categories; the 6km and 10km routes, and the wheel chair category. Kenya s Maurine Chelagat Kipchomba, crosses the finish line to win the Race of Kings 2013 Marathon which took place in Brasilia City The women s category had Kenyan Maurine Kipchomba, the race favorite completing the circuit with ease and in true Kenyan fashion, with Tanzanian athlete second. The Race of Kings has taken place since 1971, where 42 athletes graced the event, and has grown in popularity within Brasilia as the largest street race in the Federal District with participation of Olympians. Results of other key races Cuiaba Race: Kenyan long distance runner, Edwin Kipsang Rotich on January 8th won the Annual 10 Km Marathon of the Brazilian city of Cuiaba dubbed the Kings Run, followed by compatriot Mark Korir who finished second.. Iguazu Race: In July at the 6th edition of the Half Marathon in Iguazu, Kenyan s came out victorious led by Ben Kiplimo Mutai who won the men s race in 1:02:03 while Pascalia Chepkorir Kipkoech clocked 1:08:20 in the women category. Rio de Janeiro Race: Kenyan Willy Kimutai won the Rio de Janeiro 2012 Marathon in 2:15:01 with Marco Antonio Pereira second in 2:17:07, while Thabita Kibet was the best woman setting a new course record of 2:34:41, in a race that covered the course for the 2016 Olympic. 15 38ª Exposição Anual da Associação Brasileira de Tours Operators-BRAZTOA Ms. Mbela and Ms. Mutile from Kenya Tourist Board -KTB with Mr. Eduardo Barbosa, CEO of FLOT Turismo at the Kenya Stand Kenya Participates in the 38th Annual Brazilian Tour Operators Association-BRAZTOA Exhibition The Kenya Embassy in Brazil and the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB) participated in the 38th Annual Brazilian Tour Operators Association- BRAZTOA Exhibition held in Sao Paulo from the 20th to 23rd September, The Kenya expositors were Ms. Josephine Mbela, Deputy Director in-charge of Americas Region at the Kenya Tourist Board (KTB), and Ms. Suzanne Mutile America desk officer Kenya Tourist Board (KTB), Mr. Boru G Jarso, Second Secretary at the Kenya Embassy and Ms. Chemutai Sego a Kenya Student in Sao Paulo. Earlier on, the team had conducted tourism promotion activities from 12th to 19th September, 2012, which involved Officeto-Office Sales Calls in Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo cities; combined with one-onone business meetings in Sao Paulo. The exhibition was inaugurated by the President of BRAZTOA, Mr. Marco Ferraz on 20th September, Kenya s participation at the event was remarkable and the Kenya stand at the exhibition hall played host to over 300 guests in a day, most of whom left the stand with Kenyan tourism brochures and beautiful memorabilia. The meetings and participation at the BRAZTOA Exhibition presented an opportunity, not only to showcase the best of Kenya Tourism, but also to get feedback of tourism promotional activities from tour operators and agents who earlier in the year in April 2012, participated in the Familiarization Trip-FAM Trip to Kenya. These companies, namely Flot Tourism, Queensberry, Designers Tours, Ambiental tours, Terramundi Viagem and Tereza Peris Tours, confirmed they are re-focusing their marketing strategies to specialize in marketing East African destinations, and Kenya in particular. They also noted that the FAM TRIP of April, 2012 helped them realize the potential of Kenya as a tourist destination, especially for tourists from South America. The aggressive tourism campaigns which the Embassy has been spearheading in Brazil since 2010, and particularly the Familiarization Trip-FAM Trip of 2012, has generated a lot of interest within the tourism stakeholders in Brazil, leading to Designer Tours Co. to sponsor a media crew to Kenya to produce a documentary on wild beast migration in July and August, 2012 where the articles were published in the magazine is called Top Destination Magazine, and video clips broadcasted in several TV stations. Other companies which have also published articles on Kenya s tourism in their magazines and brochures include; Softravel, Queensberry tours, Flot Tourism, Best destination, CVC Tourism, Terrambundi Tours and Ambiental Viagens. Currently, Queensberry Tour Company is preparing a Familiarization Trip-FAM TRIP program for 20 travel agents to Kenya in the second half of This was the second time Kenya was participating in the BRAZTOA Exhibition, both facilitated and coordinated by the Embassy through the tourist promotion office and is considered as a major achievement that will enable Kenya access the Brazil market.
